First off, I would like to begin by stating there are many threads on the board expression confusion concerning Google PageRank and Top 10 Rankings (that's what we all really want correct?) There is really no true relationship between Google PageRank and SERP Rankings. You can in fact have a site that is ranked #1 with a PageRank of 3 and a site on the same page ranked #5 with a PageRank of 4. It really doesn't work that way. PageRank represents relevancy and how trusted you are in the community of links that populate the world wide web. The most effective way of building PageRank is by getting backlinks from other trusted sites. It's also better if those sites are relevant to your topic. You can do this in many ways but I'll just list a few here: *Listings in Authoritative Directories (Yahoo!, Dmoz, BOTW) *Edu and Gov links *Sites that are relevant to yours with a PR3 or higher (Considered Google Links) In order to understand where your site currently is, I recommend using the free tool by Softnik Technologies; Good Keywords. It has an option that will tell you how many Google links, Yahoo! links, Altavista Links, Alexa Links, and Alexa Ranking. If you need to study the specific urls that link to your site then I recommend backlinkwatch.com Now that you know where you stand, if you focus on the above stated items; Directories, Edu links, and Relevant PR3 links or higher not only will you increase your PageRank but you will also rank higher in the SERPs. Many people are misunderstanding the fact that you can have a high PR but not have high (or at least 1st page)SERP rankings. So why not have both? There are a few ways to focus on the three items mentioned above. For directories: I have a working list of paid directories and free directories which includes a DMOZ submission guide. It just took a bit of research. For edu and gov links: Well I just focus on edu...I don't like fooling around with .govs (can't be too careful these days y'know)...I got to edublogfinder.com For Google links: (relevant PR3's+) you can either engage in a link exchange or find hubs or dofollow blogs that allow you to leave a backlink. This can take some time. I also recommend the Firefox add-on SEO quake as it can organized Google results according to PageRank. Oh, and another thing. NO ONE knows Google's algorithm. I see sites out there publishing that they do hoping they will go viral and it's just not true. As you guys give feedback and have questions I'll be glad to add to this post, but I think we should all be clear on what rules we are playing by. There's alot of misinformation out there.
