For Sale, considering offers: www.GeekBoards.com - vBulletin Forum

GeekBoards.com is a forum covering many topics of interest including computers, web publishing, science, technology, astronomy and pretty much anything else that is interesting and fun to learn about.

The domain was originally registered in April 2004. The forum has been established for approximately 4 years. The forum skin / design is unique. If you publish many forums you probably know that software upgrades are often a pain with highly customized forum skins. For that reason, GeekBoards' unique design has only 1 modified template (the header template). The design is basically custom images and CSS settings which make it unique. This style of design makes upgrading the software very quick and easy.

vBadvanced is used for the sidebar modules and also on the homepage which lists the 100 most recently active discussions. Prior to using the current homepage I was previously using the following splash page: http://www.geekboards.com/splash.php which you could easily switch back to if you prefer.

I've been running Google Analytics on GeekBoards since March 27, 2009. From March 27th through August 5th the site has has 23,368 visitors (20,223 unique visitors). You can view the full Analytics report at http://www.geekboards.com/geekboards-analytics.pdf Alexa has the site currently ranked at 231,526. http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/geekboards.com Alexa doesn't really carry much weight with most, what I find most useful is the trend on the traffic stats graph: http://traffic.alexa.com/graph?&w=400&h=220&o=f&c=1&y=r&b=ffffff&r=2y&u=geekboards.com&

As of shortly before the time of this post: Threads: 970, Posts: 5,360, Members: 1,688

The site is not monetized, so there is no revenue to report on.

    GeekBoards.com was a PR6 for most of 2007 & 2008. Dropped down to a PR5 sometime around 6 months ago.

There appears to be 3,420 pages indexed in Google, 4,412 pages indexed in Yahoo and 269 pages indexed in Bing.

The vBulletin license will be included in the sale, although we can take that out if you don't want it.

The value here, in my opinion, is with the domain, the moderately established forum, the unique (and easy to manage/upgrade) design, the traffic, the PR / link juice value and the quantity of pages indexed by the search engines. GeekBoards.com would be the perfect site to acquire for someone who is interested in the topic areas covered and would provide a great starting foundation for anyone who wants to get into the business of running forums.

My reason for selling is solely financial, for cash-flow purposes. GeekBoards.com is one of many sites that I publish. I have great interest in "geek" topics, have the perfect domain and a great design on the forum. The one area that didn't go right for me with GeekBoards is that I never could find enough time to put a lot more work into the site.

Feel free to contact me via email (john @GB), private message or post in this thread with any questions or to make an offer.

pixeldawn, DarylR & EverestTech - PMs have been sent.

Absolutely not. No way no how. Do you guys even know how much vBulletin costs just by itself? It would be impossible for you to even launch a brand new vBulletin forum at that price. GeekBoards is a well established, moderately high PR forum with good traffic, members & posts/threads. There's no way you could even come close to reproducing that for 50-60 bucks. Sorry, but I must decline your offers.

Oh, I see. A misunderstanding then. I was taking it that you were actually offering that amount since I had specified in my first post to contact me with offers.

Well, if you guys want to go this route then I suppose you can feel free to do that.

    How about this:

Anyone who would like to make an offer to purchase please contact me via private message or email (john @GB) as I originally requested in my first post.

And anyone wanting to participate in a quasi-auction with williamsweb & dotcom360, please feel free to do so. We'll see where the price goes and if it hits an amount that I would sell for then I'll let you guys know right away.

    Thanks,

    John

This will go better for you if you post a price range. I'd be very interested, but I need to have some idea of your price expectations.

Current high offer is $1,000 received via PM. At this point, anyone who is seriously interested in acquiring GeekBoards.com I respectfully ask that you submit your offers via private message or email as previously requested.

The way I will be going about this is to first consider offers that are presented and negotiate with any that are near my selling range. If one of those offers works out then GeekBoards will be sold.

If I do not negotiate a sale from an offer then the next step might be to run an auction with the highest offer as the starting price. I'll post a reply to start the auction, if there's going to be one, or to announce that GB has been sold.

I acquired GeekBoards from PaulaSmilies back in the spring of 2006 for $400-500 (I forget the exact price). I believe it was via a listing on another forum and not via the DP listing. Anyhow, PaulaSmilies' thread here from back in May of 2006 explains about any paid forum posters. I've never used any forum posters myself, but PaulaSmilies did back in early 2006.

In PaulaSmilies thread you'll see that she explains GB had over 1000 posts and that most of those posts were paid. Back when I purchased GB there were fewer than 50 members accounts. I don't know exactly how many of those were forum posters, but I can say for sure that it was less than the number of members. You can cross reference the number of members back then via the date stamp on Paula's thread that I linked and with the join date on GeekBoards for members #47 and #48. As of the time of this post there are now 1,694 member accounts and 5,367 posts. Based on what Paula stated in her previous thread, that would mean there are probably 10-20% of the posts (from early 2006) that are paid forum posters and maybe 1-3% of the accounts.

Since I'm speaking of GeekBoards from back in early 2006 before I became the owner I'll add on the additional detail that GB was originally on phpBB. I converted GB from phpBB to vBulletin nearly right after I purchased the site in the Spring of 2006. Part of the current site design came from back then, but I expanded a lot on it and fully integrated the design into vBulletin.
