I own the domain name of a millionaire

    Hello,

I recently bought the domain name of a millionaire (WE'RE TALKING REALLY RICH), eg. JOHNDOE.COM and .NET who is going to be a tv star soon.

What should I do with it? Park it and put it up for sale? Make them unofficial fan sites that are for sale?

Am I at any legal risk?

I think alamperti is right. Better to stay away from TMs and famous people name.

Yes, in fact there are people who won domain dispute cases because they actually own something (may even be an intellectual property) personally and there is no way the actual "rich and famous" guy can take the domain away from the owner.

Just try your very best not to monetize in such a way that you are obviously taking advantage of his reputation (this will be used against you in dispute cases). Anyway, you can always hire a designer to create a mascot and on your page write something that this is your dream character since childhood blah blah blah...

    This is risky and tricky....

The first reply referring to Cybersquatting is probably the one that you should bear in mind.

Then again it will depend on where you live....

I think your best bet is to hope he wants to own his own domain and sell it to him for lost of money because there could be legal issues with making a site about him, for now you should park it and put like adsense on it or comething

Set up a default.htm page with a short paragraph or two, and slap some ads on it. That'll bring in just as much as parking would, and since there's "actual content" on there you should be fine legally.

Also, DO NOT CONTACT HIM OFFERING TO SELL IT! Let him contact you.

I've done this to a big company, and their lawyer has contacted me. They wanted the domain back (transfered to them) and something else... Did I give it to them? NO! I havent gotten any letters for the past few months, but it is a domain that could be used for almost anything.

    Example...

My domain is (for this example, it really isnt) "dairyland.ca" (I AM IN CANADA, yes...)

DairyLand is a company that produces milk, right? So, my domain, as long as it doesnt have anything to do with their company, its fine. I could put a picture of cows on that domain, and I would practically be in the safe zone. (As long as I dont contact them)
