I just joined twitter and saw everyone using tinyurl links.. Why dont people use normal url of the original post? is it not allowed?

People seem to prefer url shorting services for two reasons. One as iknownothing said is to cover affiliate links and the other is because twitter allows only 140 symbols in the msg.But yea you can use your own link if you prefer but you wont have much text left to write a description.

I use my own links because I usually don't write much along with the link.. but sometimes links can be really long and could be over 140 characters. I think that Twitter should copy Facebook and allow for the user to attach a link without taking away from the message.

    This

    and

because SEO urls are so long these days that 140 chars is not enough, so it helps to short it considerably and leave you some space to put a description.

If a link you are promoting is too long in Twitter's eyes, then Twitter automatically shortens the URL by themselves.

Lets you ad more info per post or update.

But, there are some users that use these shortened urls to mask there affiliate link and to allow more space to type in whatever it is they are trying to promote.
