Revenue Sharing Maybe Going Away...

I just wanted to throw this out there so it doesn't catch people by surprise... The revenue sharing functionality of this forum might be going away soon.

There's a few reasons for this...

    1. I've seen more and more people using banned AdSense IDs for themselves. Also users that enable "Allowed Sites" on their AdSense account are forgetting to add this site as an allowed site. The result from either of these scenarios is when one of their ads are up to be served, we end up with a very bad looking blank space and it's just well... ugly.

    2. Some people come to the forum with the false assumption they are going to get rich by posting 50 posts of garbage. This makes more work for moderators to clean up.

    3. I'd like to mess around with some of the new types of ad units, but can't really do so until I move the JavaScript code over to their new ad unit code system that stores the setup/variables of the ads on their end. The poses a problem because every time I want to change how the ads look, everyone that is doing the revenue sharing would need to go make the right type of unit on their AdSense account. Obviously it's not realistic to even pretend every user on the forum will do it (and do it properly).

Anyway, it's not set in stone yet, but I wanted to throw it out there for discussion at least before I pull the plug on it.

How about only give it to some "knowledgeful" users? and not to everyone (meaning manually add it to their account if someone requests)

Well that still doesn't solve the issue of #3... And to be honest, it seems like a lot of work to me... ie. 300,000+ users, probably at least 100,000 of them consider themselves knowledgeable. If only 1% of those want it manually approved, that's 1,000 users that me (or a moderator) gets to manage and hold their hand with setting up a bunch of different ad units on their AdSense account.

You can keep a limit of 25 requests per day will only be filled. And you must have 1000+ posts and good reputation. I would have no problem accepting 20 of those (as 5 may probably wont meet the requirements). And keep me by default :p

exactly, it dosenot make anything, its a good move actually.

I don't use it. i don't think many would complain or even bother about the revenue sharing feature.

To be honest I have received about $100 in clicks in the last year. I would have to go through my records for an accurate figure but I reckon it would be pretty close to that amount. I know it's not much but hey, it all adds up in the end without me doing anything :D

Shawn, you are very right on this one. I really don't think one can make any money with this. I think it saves more as an advertising tool for DP forum, than a genuine money making tool for DP forum members.

That said, think the forum is better off with its ad revenue sharing option in place, as more and more members will join thinking they can make money though adsense here! Just my point of view

As a new, shiny member I have to say I was more swayed by the content and didn't notice the adshare thing until I was going through the options. I thought "meh. Look after the pennies..." I didn't expect to make £s, but if it wasn't there, I wouldn't think it a great hardship.

This would also cleanup lots of junk posts on the forums and I have already stopped using it much before.

The reason we make sooooo less is because there are MANY members. If it was given to only selected people, lets say 10% of the total amount, we would make 90% more of what we make right now.

    I am very happy....:D.

Not because of the reasons stated by Shawn, but bcoz I feel it was leading to a lot of revenue leakage for the forum, without any substantial benefit to any individual user.

This saved revenue can now be utilized for future forum/server upgrades....

The bigger factor behind junk posts are the signatures.

I removed signatures from my forum some time back and the quality of posts improved dramatically.

I know it won't happen, but I wish DP would do away with signatures.

You mean to say take our rights for the signature? That would make em start fake signatures like this

how difficult it is to detect one...

and if there are no signatures, fake ones would be detected instantly.

    next step = permanent ban....:D.
