you should switch to mybb, you can convert the phpbb database to mybb, install mybb, install the database and your set.
    http://www.mybboard.net/downloads/merge-system

if he still wants you to upgrade to a higher plan, just tell him where to shove it & go to hostgator.

you dont have to think about anything as I am giving you cold hard facts, you can feel free to ask anyone at phpbb and anyone at mybb and either side will tell you that mybb does in fact use less resources but you can feel free to think otherwise since you seem to favor phpbb. Even though you favor it though doesn't mean that your right.

It looks like php was compiled as CGI? You might want to ask the hosting provider about compiling php as a module, instead of cgi. This might give you better performance - depending on the server. But some people say that php-cgi performs better then an apache module. So maybe ask your hosting provider which one is better for your needs.

And mybb is going to be a better option then phpbb. phpbb is hacker bait. Its some of the worst forum software you can use on a site.

Your top process CPU was close to 50% with php-cgi so it was good of them to contact you regarding your forum. Think of your neighbors ;) Anyway, how much traffic are you receiving on this forum?

Your forum doesn't look too small. You should get some adsense adverts on the forum to help pay for atleast a VPS.

I've attached an image of your usage.

As you can see usage is still to high.
Checking your webalizer logs in cpanel's web/ftp stats, you appear to have a lot of bots crawling through your site, which may be the cause of the high usage.

Yeah ok... you don't want to pay for more hosting so I doubt that you can pay to buy vbulletin. Vbulletin is not free software. *keeps an eye on his forums to see if and when he installs vb.

Yes, I agree with Kev. PHP with cgi requires high memory compare to running PHP as DSO (Dynamic Shared Object) and it could be the reason your site is consuming high CPU usage. I don't think they will change this for you. Start searching for a new host before they shutdown your board.
