Does placing links to related sites improve rankings?

As google says that their motive is to provide better information to people, I think they give weightage to links to related sites as well.

For example many pages in wikipedia have links to .gov or .edu sites like say 20 links per page. This is because wikipedia tries to provide more info to people. And the pages rank well.

Has this something to do with the .edu or .gov links on the pages? I know that wikipedia has many back links but I still wonder if the .edu or .gov links have something to do with it.

Please give your suggestions and correct me if I am wrong.

    Truly

No I dont think that it gives you any benifit for linking to anyone but if you link to a quality site only then your weightage is not passed on to other sites but if you link to a low quality site your weightage does passes on.

I think the higher ranked PR site you can link to the better

But of course they can cost you up to 299USD to be linked ... maybe higher but I know the 299USD is for PR9

Try link to your budget don't overun your budget plan your link submissions step by step and you will see the benefits

No but if you are talking about BLs then definitely it is the biggest factor for rankings.

    What do you mean?
I think you are posting even if not necessary, just to increase the number of posts.

Because I am not talking about backlinks here at all. Plz see the opening post of the thread.

Outgoing links can not improve your rankings.
Only backlinks can boost your rankings.

If you link to some authority sites in your community, you can only get some trust from google, you don't link to bad neighbourhood - you link to theme relative authority sites.

If outgoing links can effect on rankings, then I would only link to some good sites and then I wouldn't be worried about how to get backlinks.

    This is nonsense.

If you link to unrelated sites, from googles point of view that are going to decrease your value.

If you have a relevant outbound link that use rel=nofollow, does google still count that as a good outbound link and potentially reward you for it?

There's no evidence that you will be rewarded for any outbound link (ignoring the fact that a penalty might be seen as a just reward). What nofollow does indicate is that you have no confidence in the page you are linking to.

Sorry if I misunderstand you hooperman, but outbound links to totally unrelated sites (like 10 links in your footer) can give you a penalty. Thats a fact.

From http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/indexing-timeline/ ,webmasters selling links should also take a look at this(they probably did, its old news: )

"- Okay, let’s check one from May 11th. The owner sent only a url, with no text or explanation at all, but’s let’s tackle it. This is also a real estate site, this time about a Eastern European country. I see 387 pages indexed currently. Aha, checking out the bottom of the page, I see this:

Linking to a free ringtones site, an SEO contest, and an Omega 3 fish oil site? I think I’ve found your problem. I’d think about the quality of your links if you’d prefer to have more pages crawled. As these indexing changes have rolled out, we’ve improving how we handle reciprocal link exchanges and link buying/selling. "

This means that linking to unrelated pages may be dangerous.

But what if I link to related pages like .edu or .gov then I either get a benefit or don't.

We have to experiment and see. For example, if the site is about coronary heart disease then it seems better to link to related sites. And then see the results in the SEs.

You have nothing to loose if you link to related sites anyway, its only good for you users, and they may come back if they find that your site gives them good information.

I personally dont belive that sites from .gov or .edu or .mil. is better than others to link too.

Outgoing links to related sites using the particular keyword your trying to rank for can in fact negatively affect your rankings for that keyword.

This I agree with as you are providing a competitor with a backlink which will enable them to be ranked higher. Personally the way i understand it is that its not how many sites you link to but how many sites link to you.
