Does anybody use this method for getting links?

Sorry if this is pretty common place but its pretty new to me so I thought I'd share.

I'm lucky enough that the niche I operate in isn't particularly webmaster dominated. The result is alot of well designed, naturally high pr websites, the owners of which don't really understand the value of their links. I pick out the nice ones, email the people and offer them $10 to stick my links at the bottom of their home page on the basis that they never remove the links. As far as they're concerned they just made 10 bucks off a fool. As far as I'm concerned, I just got a load of permenant nice pr (4+) backlinks at $2 a pop.

Just thought I'd share and once again, sorry if this is common practise

That sounds great. Most of the sites I work with are not in such niches so usually I have to pay more for those links if I can find them at all.

That definitely makes sence. Especially, because they are good content pages typically... and you have a link on their homepage... best place.

There are also a few which think they are robbing you, I've had 1 or 2 people mail me back saying something along the lines of "I sort of feel a bit mean taking your money for this, so I'll put you on the navigation bar so you actually get some traffic" which is even better. Make sure you never tell them why you want the links

Most people don't care about nor know the value of their footer links. You can pick up a very nice pr off of people not knowing much about SEO and making money off of their sites.

This would only work if the site owners are very naive and don't understand the importance of links.

So how much is a PR4 worth?

I'm webmaster for www.longdale.co.uk which has a PR4.

I'd be interested in making some money for the owner of the site as long as the advertiser was in the same market (arts and crafts, collectibles).

The best thing is to start your own affiliate program. Then you can email all the sites offering 10% comission and they add your links. Most of them get no traffic or sales and then you get a free lifetime link.

As long as you are in a niche that is not heavily targeted I would say that you can get most of the links for free in the mid-term if you have decent content.

The benefit of buying would be that you get a cheap one way link immediatley, whereas to get an immediate free link you would have to go reciprocal. So it would be a route that I'd only go if pressed for time.

I'd say the best sites to approach about this are hobbyist sites. I've found that it works quite well in the travel vertical, as there are a lot of people that have websites telling friends and family about their travels. Those are often not monetized, but are content-rich and therefore tend to have a decent PR.

@SEOdan: Are you also doing this outside your niche to get non-themed PR4 links? If so, do you feel that it helps?

I haven't really tried it outside the niche because I don't like paying for links which aren't on websites with similar content to mine. I don't feel the small benefit gained them them justifies the (however small) cost.
