Google ambient audio, television targeting using your mic

Don't know if this has been posted yet :

I don't know if this is true or not, but it's disturbing.

Even IF everything they say about privacy is true, it's a violation. ANY data recorded through my microphone and sent out to ANYWHERE is a severe violation of my trust, in my opinion. That's like the phone company listening to my conversations, just to see if I mention products, then serving me ads about those products. Even if the conversation is 100% anonymous and just some byte code fingerprint, it's disgusting.

But to me, the real fear is, if this is a genuine project they are working on, then what is to prevent the government from saying, "We have a secret electronic communications warrant here, and we demand you use your software to record ALL audio."

We already know that AT&T, Verison and Bellsouth didn't prevent the government from illegally collecting call information (http://www.ourmidland.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17087551&BRD=2289&PAG=461&dept_id=472539&rfi=6). And they claim that is innocuous data as well, if it's so innocent, how does it track terrorists? Besides, they still know if you called an AIDs clinic, or an abortion clinic. They know everyone you have called and when, they can probably extrapolate from that data alone.. who is gay, who is cheating, who has what medical conditions, who likes phone sex, who calls hookers.. etc etc. None of this data should be freely in the hands of the government.

But I digress, Google should not be collecting this type of seedy ill-gotten information either, they should not know what you are watching on television in the privacy of your own home. Both cases are an abuse and an absurd violation.

If this has already been posted, I apologize. If the article is a hoax, then I am happy. I think it's likely it's a hoax, or some experimental nonsense that will never get off the ground.

What do you folks think? Heard of this? Been posted already? Think it's an invasion of privacy? Think it's a hoax?

Then I guess I won't be using google as a resource anymore, because i'll be damned if I'm going to let some 'entity' take over my mic and listen in.
