Both the sites competing with each other on same set of Keywords?

This is unethical practice, I feel. SEO's should adopt a policy for not to take any identical work together. It wont do justice to either site.

there are nos. of ways to improve your SERPS, why dont you think of changing your SEO?

Just because their domain is similar won't make your SEO work suddenly improve their rankings. That is ridiculous.

Perhaps you have both misunderstood me - there is no competition between the sites -- one in the US and one in the UK -- both providing LOCAL services -- so totally UNCOMPETITVE.

But the optimisation for keywords like 'london dry cleaners' has helped the site not based in the UK which is totally unrelated to London -- has no links containing London, text, metas ETC is coming up higher in the SERPS than the one that is in Londonn (and the one that has the links pointing to it).

So clearly, google is having some sort of malfunction == do u agree? Got any suggestions?

What search engine are trying to rank on? I do not see that site that you are talking about anywhere, however I see yours on both msn and yahoo, but not google.

But I agree with the other 2 post, whatever optimization that you do on your site can not help another site.

No, you misunderstood us. Whatever you do to your site won't affect their site. That is still ridiculous. (I can't put that any easier than this. :p)

    I've just done a search on google.com

on two searches just as an example.

    'dry cleaning london'

    www.mastercleaners.com 2nd page

    www.themastercleaners.com 4th page

    'london dry cleaners'

both on the second page but mastercleaners.com higher in the serps

So despite your statement that it's ridiculous -- there it seems to me that there is something more to it. That a site that is totally unrelated to the search apart from it's relationship to my url is ranking higher than a site that is a relevant result? Are you sure?

We have tried to give the answers but you do not seem to understand. But here is main reason they are ranking better than you. They have google backlinks you do not, that is the reason. So the best thing that you can do is work on your link building and give it some time, some things will never make sense but that is just the way it is.

The first thing I would do this moment is REMOVE the dry cleaners links from your forum signature. This website (DP) is associated with webmasters and Internet marketing. It is NOT representative of dry cleaning and laundry services. In fact, each time you post a reply here, you bump your site farther and farther down into obscurity.

Listen to banless and others here - you must work towards associating your website with other sites that are related to your industry. This is done by cultivating inbounds from those sites to yours.

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately I'm finding it very hard to get relevant backlinks, such being the nature of the industry.

Hmm... I am sitting here viewing no less than a 1,000 qualified link prospects for your site and your industry.

Forgive me, but I see a person who refuses to listen to anyone else.

lol -- in fact quite the opposite --- been listening to everyone who said just build links....etc etc

Tried a bit of link building but a lot of sites refused because I had PR 0

I understood that reciprocal links are bad (again I will happily admit I'm worng)

When you say 'qualified link prospects' what do you mean and how did you get a list of 1000 of them?

I don't think so, otherwise it would be very easy to push your compeditors out of the serps just by posting in unrelated forums.

Someone needs to stop smoking here.

And I agree with jaybong. Those links don't have a detrimental effect, their effect is merely smaller than "good" links.

I think Bornagaintrader needs to learn a bit more about websites, the internet and common sense before jumping into complex ideas about SEO. If you really think that websites can benefit simply from having a similar domain name than you dont have a grasp of this industry, website, or the internet in general. If that were true, i could just buy thegoogle.com, theyahoo.com, etc. and enjoy top rankings.

That of course is not the case - because that has no logic and is completely idiotic.

So, instead of confusing yourself further, go take a few classes at the community college, learn some web design, take a few philosophy and marketing classes and then get back to us.
