Changing my phpBB title tags

OK Google has dropped my sites from it's rankings again, and I have recieved some advice from people here at DP that on this occasion it might have something to do with my title tags, and this might actually be true because we did change our title tags recently. So I was wondering if you could point out what I'm doing wrong.

Basically what I think would be most effective for my forum is having the index title that is this, I made the changes in the overall_header.tpl:

    {Page_Title} - Plus relevant keywords
Runescape Boards - Runescape Forums Hq, Clans, Tips, Help, PKing Videos, Skill & Quest Guides

But for the thread title tags I can't manage to achive a title without the keywords coming up for the rest of the thread titles as well. What I mean by this is the thread title tags come up as:

(Page_Title) - Runescape Forums Hq, Clans, Tips, Help, PKing Videos, Skill & Quest Guides

What I would like to have happen is the thread titles to come up as (Thread Title) - (Forum Title) and by "forum title" I mean the Forum that the thread is located in's title.

What do you think of this? Is it possible? How do I do it?

    Thanks.

So...let's say you have a forum called..."Hockey teams in Canada" so when people are in your forum homepage...the title would be "Hockey teams in Canada", then let's say they choose a forum titled "Calgary Flames" now that'd have to display something like "Calgary Flames - news, tickets, players and discussions"?

Then, if people click on a topic in there let's say a topic titled "Flames win the stanley cup" then it'd have to show up as "Flames win the stanley cup - Calgary Flames" without your KW's right?

I don't think it's be possible just with a template edit. You'd probably need to insert more variables and change the core files since they both would use the same variables.....but, you could put a limit on the number of wirds in the title tag I guess......

I don't think I'd put the KW's in the title tag description of the forum...make the forum name descriptive enough by itself and it should be fine IMO...

There are other SEO stuff you could do to rank well in the forums...

If it is your runescape board...there are couple things that could help you

    1. change the urls to include forum name and topic title something like myboard.com/forumname/topic-title.htm (example: http://boards.phpbb-seo.com/phpbb-seo-mods/seo-url-topic-anywhere-vt157.html)

    2. another thing that helps a lot is having an archive similar to that of Vbulletin. Just what it looks like when you click on the "Library" link on the bottom of this forum.

P.S. you might want to put up a request at the phpbb mod request forums, they'll be able to answer your questions (hopefully)

Thanks for the response I was more looking for the homepage/index page having the keywords in addition to the Forum name (please note that Runescape Boards is the name of my forums):

Runescape Boards - Runescape Forums Hq, Clans, Tips, Help, PKing Videos, Skill & Quest Guides

And when I selected a particular forums i'd like it to come up:

    Forum Name - Runescape Boards

And when a thread is selected have it come up as:

    Thread Title - Forum Name

    or

Thread Title - Forum Name - Runescape Boards

So basically I'd only want the kwyords added on the homepage. Is this possible?

Hey apparently it wasn't all that difficult as I thought it'd be. I thought the variables were defined in overall header or includes/pageheader but apparently they aren't.

Here's hoping you'll find it helpful and that i got the question right

    I installed a test forum at http://albertaseo.com/forum

And, I wrote up a little about how to do it...PhpBB title Tag SEO

Hope that helps, seems to work well at my test forum.

Thanks for the update. I applied the changes you suggested on this page - http://handpickedurls.com/forum-management/phpbb-title-tag-seo.html - but it didn't quite work out right. This is how my title tags on my forums - www.rsboards.com - currently stand:

    Homepage: Site Name - Keywords
    In a Forum: Forum Name
    In a Thread: Thread Name

    Examples
Homepage: Runescape Board - Runescape Forums Hq, Clans, Tips, Help, PKing Videos, Skill & Quest Guides. (www.rsboards.com)
In a forum: General Runescape Discussion (http://www.rsboards.com/viewforum.php?f=5)
In a thread: Full Rune Pked (http://www.rsboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=24275)

The homepage title tag is fine, but I would have liked to have the actual forums and threads title's different. How I would have liked it to turn out would have been something like this:

Homepage: Runescape Board - Runescape Forums Hq, Clans, Tips, Help, PKing Videos, Skill & Quest Guides.
In a forum: General Runescape Discussion - Runescape Boards
In a thread: Full Rune Pked - General Runescape Discussion - Runescape Boards

Is it possible to do this? If so how?

Hmm in your viewforum.php and viewtopic.php files, what does the title tag look like? I think it got it quite right in my test forum that I liked off to...

Did you change anything before? (I mean I did mine from an unmodded phpbb forum so it's likely that the mods you had installed messed up with the title tag stuf..) what mods do you have? And do you remember deleting anything from these files? Also, I remember you mentioning the header templates..what did you change there?

    What skin/template are you using?

    Make sure you've added
    $forum_name- name of forum
    $topic_title - title of topic
phpbb automatically adds the umm Forum title in it..(the one you define from adminCP-configuration)

Yes I have also installed a phpb forum in http://forums.free-online-directory-4u.com/. Initially I had problems in Changing the title but I had solved it to some extent. But not fully. i am doing an R&D on that issues. But the way i solved is by changing the title from the database. There is a database file named phpbb_config and u can change the title from there...
