suite101.com, servicemagic.com, time.com, about.com, ezine.com..etc What cms is popular among bigwigs?
There is no exact CMS that would well known sites you mentioned use. It's normal, they use custom CMS' based on their needs.
custom made one... and software houses make shi*loads of money with that, even more with support for the same cmss..
If they use a CMS, it's drupal: http://www.avenuewebmedia.com/high-profile-sites-run-drupal http://tips.webdesign10.com/drupal/10-top-drupal-sites e.g., Popular Mechanics, the Onion, Warner Brothers, New York Observer...
Drupal was the most open source CMS used by big web site and big companies or organizations with huge traffics ie. spreadfirefox, ubuntu, crooks and liars, votehillary.org, nokia, symantec etc.
There are soo many CMS scripts out there and some are good at some things... never saw one that gives you a complete solution with all the bells and whistles done properly... so i have to echo everyone elses' sentiments... a custom CMS is the way to go... more control, more ability to add-on etc...
Most of the website uses Wordpress as a better blog system, and professional websites use joomla for its professional customizability.
Large and popular websites might also use Wordpress or some other highly costumizeable CMS, but most websites which has a reasonable visitor count each month might run custom made CMS. It\s important to be unique!

Fricken Word Press, Where Else? Some of the most successful bloggers that blog about blogging, use Word Press. That should tell you something. The platform seems to work just fine, as is, for these multi million (and some billion) dollar companies, not to mention MIT and Harvard 2 of the most prestigious Education Institutions in the world with some of the most brilliant Legal minds and mathematicians, and some of the most read publications , ever . If it's good enough for them, it is certainly good enough for me. Don't confuse custom CMS with Custom Template design. Some of these may have changed recently, but they were all using word press when the list was made, and I believe that word press keeps their own list pretty updated. But Drupal is good too. Who's using that again ? J-Lo was it ?
There are lot of huge sites and big companies use Drupal, you can see at Dries Buytaert list. But it's not the complete list because he didin't put several sites like MIT sites, Crooks and Liars etc. Now the question is where is Joomla
Ask yourself a question - lets say you wanted to open a trucking company. Are you going to hire some people to build the truck, or are you going to buy a truck from a company that already makes trucks? Chances are your going to buy a truck from Mac, Kenworth, Freightliner,,,,,. Its a lot easier to do that then to hire the people, and spend the time to build a whole new truck. After all, is there a "real" need to reinvent the wheel? Companies use what is already been made by someone else. There is no need in spending the money, and investing the time to reinvent something that is already on the market. You might hire some mechanics to work on the trucks when they have problems. These are your web site developers and coders. They are going to make sure the oil is changed, the tires are rotated,,,,, the website stays updated, server stays updated,,,. The developers might make changes to the core code of the CMS they are using. But that is just like thing else. If your going to open a website development company, are you going to reinvent the computer? Or, are you going to use one that someone else already made? Its just like the trucks and the content management systems. Most companies are going to use a commercial grade CMS, Drupal or Wrodpress. It all depends on how much time and money they want to invest into the project. Most companies will hire a couple of computer nerds, then they will install drupal or wordpress and go from there. The company I work for, I use wordpress on their site. I see no reason to code an entire new CMS when I can install wordpress and have the website up and running in a few minutes. My employer is happy and I am happy with the results.
So true. If I had a dollar for everyone that I heard say, "I'm going to design my own CMS" and then never heard from them again, I would be rich.
Pringo and Community Server are two enterprise CMS's -- both are pretty expensive. They both have a list of fortune 500's who use their CMS.
