AVG is one of the best IMo, I also recommend using the trend micro online scanner, it takes a bit of a download (coule of minutes on a 56k) but it scans using its latest database, and has found one or two things that avg missed.

Also recommend, adaware by lavasoft

spybot search and destroy (spybot s&D)

these are both scumware adware removal tools

also noone using internet explorere should surf without installing IE restrictions, this stops all chance of your browser being hijacked. Which brings me onto the last one, hijackthis, does what it says on the tin, removes hijackings from your browser. So if yours has been grabbled by mybar/lop/mysearch etc, run these puppies and get your life back

I use housecall.antivirus.com, the free online scanners of ravantivirus and mcAfee (mcAfee does not clean) one after the other, on different days and also use spyBot. These four things put together seem to work.
