Wolfram Alpha want's to compete with Google

Discussion in 'Google' started by kiduka, Mar 9, 2009.

I came across this article about a new search engine Wolfram Alpha. It claims to take things to the next level which will make it superior to google. This to me is just far fetched, it will take a search engine years to get to google level and even more years to become better them.

Well I think you guys should take a look at the article yourselves, heres the article:

Is Wolfram Alpha a Google beater?

I love people who name stuff after themselves.

Been a while since someone's posted the 'is this the google killer' thread.

Rough rule of thumb, a search engine needs to be half an order of magnitude better than the current leader in order to displace it. As was Google compared to Altavista etc 10 years ago.

I think it will not be long before someone does walk in and take giant steps over google. Someone has to be looking at everything that google does and take it a step further. It maybe not a month but a acouple of years down the road. I am looking forward to that day. I myself does not like google and the way especialy play with your adsense and the way they play with rankings. Don't get me wrong I still get plenty of traffic from them with my 4 sites. I also get plent of traffic from yahoo and msn. Google is not god and yes there will be something better than them. It's in the cards and the hand has been dealt.

One can not take away google's years of hard work in a night or few months...
It would take a decade to beat google if you do better throughout the years...

Well said... and agree about the traffic they send but wish they would be
more open with us (webmaster community) instead off treating everyone like dirt
and not having any explanation in webmaster tools about what your site did wrong

I myself like searchme.com but feel that even it could be better then what it is and
hope this new engine wont be anything like cuil.com all hype and poor results.

PS here is a big article on this new engine

    http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/0...to-factual-questions-this-is-going-to-be-big/

    thx

If they do ever get it to "learn" new facts as it finds them, it will be huge! :)

    Hello...

    @Thefluffball...

You dont get it... Its a search engine for "factual information"

You type in questions to true information (past recorded events) that you need an answer for..

"Winner of superbowl 42"..... and it will give you the answer

"Current population of Alaska" .... and it will give you the answer

(In theory of course if i read correctly) which would make it the "Smartest SE" that
you dont click anything or have to search threw any links to get your answer.

Quote: It doesn’t simply return documents that (might) contain the answers, like Google does, and it isn’t just a giant database of knowledge, like the Wikipedia. It doesn’t simply parse natural language and then use that to retrieve documents, like Powerset, for example. Instead, Wolfram Alpha actually computes the answers to a wide range of questions — like questions that have factual answers such as “What country is Timbuktu in?” or “How many protons are in a hydrogen atom?” or “What is the average rainfall in Seattle?” Think about that for a minute. It computes the answers. Wolfram Alpha doesn’t simply contain huge amounts of manually entered pairs of questions and answers, nor does it search for answers in a database of facts. Instead, it understands and then computes answers to certain kinds of questions.

Wolfram Research have the best mathematician and programmers in the world.. They made the first program that integrates and differentiate all kinds of equation fast and effectively.

Wolfram Alpha will surely be a success if more and more people help them in advertising.

haha...i visited the link and the search engine does look like a google killer to me. First of all, the name is pretty weird. Wolfram? cmon! You gotta have catchy short names like google, yahoo or ask.

Also, why do these SE keep claiming that they are google killer? Just to create some hype? look what happened to cuil!

No ones gonna remember that name its too long!
Google has worked for years building its reputation and improving its search results and its gonna take many more years for some other SE to beat google. Its not impossible but someone someday will surely come up with a better SE..guess we'll just have to wait and see :)

The core of Wolfram is Mathematica, which has 20 years of development behind it. These guys have been doing advanced algo's before Google even got out of Stanford, do not underestimate Wolfram that's all i'm going to say they are not some startup who opened shop yesterday.

Mathematica is "very" powerful, for instance take a look at the simple and fast code used for logo manipulations:

Woooow hold on ... after viewing that i had to get a shot of some mega death
as my mind started to smoke ... to complex for me at 7 am lol

This SE will be a winner for fast Answers but if im actually searching for a video or a specific
car at a dealership in some state i dont think it will be able to give me my desired results ....
(and thats what it will take to beat google as a search engine)

Will just wait to see what happens in 2 months :)

I wish them guys the best of luck on their opening day and suggest they get enough servers
(so the same thing dont happen to them like it did with cuil.com)

WA might just kill wikipedia. But definitely not google.

It might give back very good results for factual stuff like where is Singapore, How much is a fish burger in Hong Kong.

However, how would it process things like, what is the best online casino. It's just impossible.
