The thing to remember sandossu is a lot of the queries are domain (navigational) or company queries so the first result will be the one that the user wants. With generic queries like "auto insurance" the percentages won't be the same.

It certainly proves that we need to keep aiming for number 1.

Well, in theory and it seems in practice as well, the first result gets most clicks Users come across that result first and so they are most likley to clicik on it. However, I did not expect the gap between the first and 2nd result to be so wide.

Also have to take into account that AOL'ers are probably alot more likely to type in the name of a search engine into the search box, rather than us normal people who just go to the search engine first. :D

Side note: interesting but not that surprizing, check out the number of aol'ers who searched on anything with the phrase optimization in it, or the fact of how they didn't use the term seo :p

That is very interesting that was not at all what I would have thought it would be. I figure it was 60%/30%/10% for the first 3.

alot of the searches that result in a click on the first result will be searches for actual urls.

alot of the searches in that data set was of the 'domain.com' type.

    my 2 pence worth.

Mad4 is right, a lot of people search for Mickey Mouse and land on Disney, but lesser people search for mouse cartoon, so yeah

I agree, I would have not thought it would have been such a large gap between the 1st and 2nd.

I new that the 1st gets the most clicks followed by the 2nd and 3rd.

I'm no maths expert and may have a bit of a dumb day but look at what it says:

To me it says, out of all the combined clicks for spot 1 to 10, number one gets 42.25%. It does not mean, out of all the people clicking, only 42.35% clicks the number one.

To put it in simple data:

    Total clicks: 100

    1. 42 clicks
    2 12
    3 8
    4 6
    5 5
    6 4
    7 3
    8 3
    9 3
    10 3
    11+ 14 combined

It doesn't represent who clicks what. There is no data about individual clicks in what he quoted. It's only about total clicks.

I hope that explains my point of view.
