It seems the staff of google.jp had been using several blogs to do promotion for Google japan as yahoo is dominating there. So they have been slapped. How do you feel about this ?
I can only say : Yeah ! If Google wants to buy links on paid reviews, then he must first allow us to do the same and avoid penalizing us
Is this a joke? Why would google penalise its own site since PR is an entity controlled only by themselves?
Well I feel bad for the people who were ignorant of their company's own guidelines since this is not a good time to be on the hot-seat at work (especially given the current economy). With Google's high profile, the plan had zero chances of success so I don't see anything intentionally deceitful. The drop in PR is hard to explain. They must have updated the toolbar immediately to show they took action, normally there wouldn't be instant feedback like this. I can only imagine that they devalued all links to Google from every site that had anything to do with the scheme. But there must be more to it than just that. Perhaps they devalued all links to the widgets they were promoting as well. I doubt we'll hear anything more conclusive since it would give away some algo secrets.
Dont really care what there PR is to be honest. They should have stripped it to PR ZERO like they have done to other sites if it was buying paid links or blog links or whatever they did in japan... laterz malcolm
All is automated mate. So the drop in PR is not surprising at all. It just proves, Google's automated algo to track suspicious movements of links is getting better and better.
So did Google actually build paid links etc. to google.co.jp? It seems like a strange move. And I really can't understand why they would want to devalue their own links?
strange checked [ info:google.jp ] got result of google.co.jp but check PR of google.jp has PR9 and google.co.jp is 5
There is also some info here (PS not my blog) http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/02/09/pay-per-post-google-uses-every-trick-to-beat-yahoo-in-japan/
It doesn't matter if google.co.jp has pr5 or pr9 or any other pr in my opinion...as far as pagerank is the google's measure. So google wouln't rank in google or...? Nobody searches for google in google anyway That's called populism my friends. With decreasing their pr they already created a buzz ... (there wouln't be any other consequences for them except getting more popular). Everybody is talking about that now.
I agree with you 100% on this. It seems Yahoo is dominating one of the largest/lucrative search markets in the world. So, when Matt publicly talked about it - it can never be beyond Viral Marketing that Google.Jp is trying with a little bit help from its parent company. What is PR anyway? I believe -- 90% of people who browse sites don't know it. Out of rest 10% -- 6% webmasters don't know it. (That's why prominent SEOs earn millions). Out of rest 4 percent - 3% are webmasters - who are fully aware of themselves of SEO, so they take advantage of it. The rest 1% are like me-- PIMPs - which comprises of SEOs, webmaster who provide resources/services to them, Googlers etc. etc. So it is foolish on the part of anybody to take indiscriminate steps based on a minuscule section of society that has millions of users. YES - I am talking about Google!!! It has been on a tirade against anything that manipulates its SERPs. Whilst - I have nothing against this cleaning policy - I have several questions to ask to Google's anti-SPAM team (Read Matt Cutts). #1. Why don't you educate the SEO community how to serve their ignorant clients rather than a personal friend of Matt Cutts -leader of anti-SPAM team of Google- (Rand Fishkin of SEOMOZ) educating Google search engineerss? #2. Why can't you make a bot (for God's sake - its IT super high-way age) - that would value highly relevant content rather than an SEOed page? #3. With all the abilities & resources you have at your disposal -- WHY its is hard to make a bot/crawler to fetch the most --most- most relevant content? #4. As you know - an industry thrives on sub-markets so that when you fail to provide quality products you can put all blames on them. Is that why you still keep the SEO industry alive -- for your own benefit? #5. If an ideal algo is applied - Net Neutrality ( that I understand) can really be the ultimate solution. Some-one from Amazon/Tibet/Afganisthan/Sudan without any knowledge of webmastering or SEO can be on top if his/her only intention is to provide truthful & authentic information to the people searching for it. Isn't that what you preach for? But what is in practice? But -- I don't believe Google can answer my questions right now -- because as mighty as they look - they are still dependent on so many sub-markets/industries !! So long
