Adsense: Do I count as a page impression?

Discussion in 'Reporting & Stats' started by ccano, Aug 9, 2006.

Hi. If I visit my web site 15 times today, will my Adsense Reports add 15 page impressions to my stats?

I am constantly working on my web site and I visit it frequently to see how it looks in multiple browsers, etc., so I'm wondering if all these visits I make to my site are bringing down my CTR (since I obviously don't click the ads).

    Thanks :)

it will bring your ctr down, but hopfully you get enough traffic where 15 impressions won;t be important at all even a little

If you have 2 units on the page it will count as 30 impressions
    and so on

Yes, it does. I am not sure if adsense provides an option to discount your own visits by logging your IP, but the default setting is that it does.

Find your Hosts file. On windows XP it's in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
    Open it using notepad

    Under
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    Add
    127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
    Save

Open a new browser and all Google adds will not be displayed.

When you are done with your site add #<space><space>
    # 127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
    Save

Open a new browser and all Google adds will be displayed again.

I use my method on my kids computer permanently as they often visit my site and I don't want them clicking ads and I don't have to worry about them turning ad blocker off.

You can also disable javascript while viewing your site so now you have several ways to block your ads and you can choose what works best for you.

Of course, if you do this, you can't see what ads are being served on your own website.

You can set the publisher ID to "ca-test" while testing (see this thread). The advantage is that you won't get credit for the clicks either, thereby protecting yourself from accidental click fraud.

There are some more sophisticated solutions (PHP/JavaScript) which detect your own IP address and switch to the test ID. I don't have anything in place on my own website yet though.

    Edit: Here is another reference...

    Cryo.

15 impressions a day is negligible and not worth worrying about. Even if you only get 1000 impressions a day, 15 out of that is not even worth a nanosecond thinking about.

BTW what is the obsession with CTR? Who cares what the CTR is? The only number I care about is the one underneath "Earnings".

Well by monitoring the CTR I can tell how effective the ads are. If I have a low CTR, I might try changing the ad position, or putting more/less ads, etc. That way I can see what's most effective for my site.

I know it's slightly off topic, but it is a bit similar so I figured I'd post it in relation to invalid impressions - I asked Google about this and about invalid CPM impressions and here's what they said -

Maybe this will help you out a bit as well if you were considering the impact of pageviews on CPM ads :)
