Examples of ads that don't get approved (by me at least)

Based on the wording of the guidelines this all seems pretty obvious to me, but for some reason an amazing amount of ads for great sites need to be changed and re-submitted.

    Anchor Text:

    Correct anchor text:
    Text Link Ads
    Text link ads

    Incorrect anchor text:

Text LINK Ads (capitalisation for emphasis)

Text link ads! (symbol for emphasis)

text link ads (capitalise first letter)

    Description:

    Correct description:
Free advertising coop providing text link ads and banner ads for webmasters.

    Incorrect descriptions:

Free Advertising Coop Providing Text Link Ads And Banner Ads For Webmasters. (every word starts with a capital)

FREE advertising coop providing text link ads and banner ads for webmasters. (capitalisation for emphasis)

Advertising coop for webmasters. (too short)

Free advertising, text link ads, banner ads, online advertising. (list of keywords not sentence)

Free advertising coop providing text link ads and banner ads for webmasters! (symbol for emphasis)

To give you an idea of how often these mistakes are made - if I've got 40 or so ads waiting for review, I usally disapprove 50% without even visiting the site simply because (1) the description is too short, or (2) every word of the anchor text is lowercase, or (3) there is a ! or something stupid like that somewhere in the description, or (4) over-capitalisation.

anyway it's ALL important Because It ?COULD BE? an ad going on your site!!! etc.

Thank you for making that list. I know that a lot of it is spelled out in the TOS, but there are a lot of questions here about why ads don't get approved, and I believe this will be a helpful resource.

I had a similar description that was denied for not being a complete sentence - a rule I never saw in the guidelines. My description was:

"A weblog covering current internet and technology news and information."

Just letting you know that some reviewers might not approve that description you listed. (Not complaining, just pointing out that it's not consistent.)

Between this and the referrer link mentioned last week, it would be nice and save everyone time and confusion if the rules were clearly defined across all reviewers.

I was denied once for !

I read the TOS more carefully about punctuation, and also noted:

I make it a rule to double check the TOS every time I submit a new ad. I don't want to waste anyone's time, but more importantly, don't want to be terminated for doing so.

Shawn I've noticed ppl have been getting a lot better with the format of their ad submissions.

But those whose first language may not be English do seems to be making a lot of mistakes.

Could the instructions of the coop perhaps be offered in a few different languages.

This is a great listing. I've made the mistakes like that in the past. I thought I was the only bozo though :)

My own ads have been disapproved. I'm terrible with discriptions and forgetful as well.

The ones that get me are the ones that you reject over and over and over and....

"Suchmaschinenoptimierung" <- isn't that like german for "Search Engine Optimization"...?

Well in German it's one word... I wouldn't cut up my name to be "Sh awn Hoga n" or something, I would make the font size smaller to fit whatever specific space it needed to go into.

In many languages the meaning of a sentence can change radically depending on wether you write the words together or apart. Compare these two for example (hope the swedish characters don't mess thing up to much for you):

    Rödhårig sjuksköterska
    Röd hårig sjuk sköterska

The first one translates to "red haired nurse" and the second one to "red hairy sick nurse". Or these two:

    Skumtomte
    Skum tomte

"Santa shaped marsmallow" vs. "Santa of questionable character".

Hope this makes you more foregiving (fore giving? :) ) for other languages peculiarities.

ps. For the record "Search engine optimization" in Swedish is "Sökmotoroptimering" (writing this as "Sök motor optimering" shifts the meaning to be something like "Search for engine optimization", maybe something to do with making your car run faster?).

I mentioned this in my other thread which went unanswered. I don't want ads that show up in Russian, German, etc appearing on my site, as my visitors are stictly in the US, and the appearance of such links really looks out of place. We have the ads already being classified under the language field, why can't we put it to use?

Technically none of Dominics "correct" descriptions are complete sentences. They are missing a verb. I still write descriptions like this hoping the grammar police will allow for an implied subject and verb.

What would be nice is an "Edit" button for existing or submitted ads.

As it is now, if I spot a spelling error or something, I have to delete the ad and start again.

    Dominic,

Off topic, but thanks to all the people, such as yourself, who approve ads so quickly. It's really nice =)

I'll second that... often I see an ad approved within 10-20 minutes... otherwise, it's done by the next morning when I log in.
