Need a Site Header for Nexreg.ca by Fri Aug 11 - Paying $50

    Howdy all,

I'm working on updating the website http://www.nexreg.ca and decided that we badly need a new header. I'm horrible at this stuff, so I decided that I'd hold a contest.

DETAILS ABOUT THE SITE: Nexreg.ca - It's for a company (Nexreg Compliance) that sells chemical regulatory compliance services to other businesses. Clients include everyone from small cosmetics companies to Fortune 500 companies. The company is similar to a law firm, or accounting agency.

WHAT WE WANT IN A HEADER:

Size: We're optimizing for 1024x768 - we'd like something that is full width for someone of that resolution (we very, very rarely have a 800x600 visitor). As far as height goes, it doesn't matter too much, though shorter is better than taller.

Colors: The new version of the website will be similar to the old one, so think in conservative colors. It's for a corporate website.

Feel: We want the website to feel like you're visiting IBM or 3Ms or Pfizer's website. Big, well known corporations.

Images: We need you to include the Nexreg Logo in the header (available on the website). You can use the other picture we have on there, but it's not necessary. Feel free to use any other stock photo, that gives the corporate tone we're looking for. People in a boardroom would work well, or maybe scientists in lab coats (since it's the chemical industry).

Content: We need to create links in the header so users can choose the following languages:

    English
    Français
    Español
    日本語
    한국어
    中文

(the last three are Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (simplified))

They can either be those words or flags, or both. We would like to make it pretty obvious to the user that they can read the page in other languages, without making the design look gaudy.

We also need the ability to expand the list of languages, since we'll likely be adding others in the future. So we'll need some spare room somewhere.

OPTIONAL: You can also include the tagline 'The leader in chemical product compliance' somewhere in the header, but it isn't necessary. I have a feeling it will be cluttered enough, but if you want to try, go for it!

    THE CONTEST:

We'll pay $50 USD to the winner, via PayPal (or another method, if that isn't acceptable to the winner). Please have all your entries in by Friday August 11th.

We'll announce the winner on Monday, August 14th.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I look forward to seeing what you guys can come up with!

    Cheers,

    Mike

Just to clarify something someone e-mailed me about:

You can either post your submission on here, or e-mail them to me.

Also, we don't mind if people add their submissions to their portfolios - even the non-winning ones. :)

I've only had a couple of lukewarm e-mail responses for this. It looks like I'm underpaying - I'm new at this. What would be a fair amount of money to offer?

I'll keep this active for another day or so, but if I don't get too many responses, I'll have to cancel the contest. I'll post something over at getafreelancer.com instead.

Wow.. I heard from a whole bunch of you privately! I guess there is some interest.

There's a lot of great portfolios out there. I don't know who to choose, so I think I'll continue to run this as a contest.

To make it more worthwhile to the winner, I've upped the prize to $80.

To answer a couple questions I've received.

File format: Probably .jpg works best. Some image type, at least. I'll need to creat an image map, so users can click on the various flags/language names.

Size: Please make the width 1000 pixels. You can choose the height, but try to keep it is a short as possible.

Image: Make sure the Nexreg logo is in there (it's available at nexreg.ca). Other than that, feel free to include anything you'd like.

Time: I'd like to have the entries in by Friday at midnight, if possible.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Mike

Wow.. I really like that entry.. thanks, asterix! That's going to be tough to beat.

As I was telling Asterix before, I'd like to have the banner be 1000 pixels wide. I'd like it to be skinny - 150 pixels high at most.

    Great job!!

Looks good Stewart. For the second design, put a thin line on the top extending from the language chooser box. That way it frames the header nicely. When the "change" is clicked, have it open up dynamically to the left, or wherever. Top notch, I like it a lot, looks web2.0ish. Wish I had time to do this.

Wow.. there's a *ton* of great designs. Thanks guys, it's going to be really hard to choose!

Still about 10 hours left (or so) to get designs in. Then we'll need a couple days to pick a winner.

Thanks everyone who has entered.. you've made it very tough on us to choose.

Got a nice design there budy. Few suggestions: make the logo a little smaller and erase those shadows to make it cleaner and professional. Just an opinion its up to you and to him.

yea, its my style. i like uniqueness. i try new stuff.
i dont like how all sites look the same.
also, if he dont want them, i can remove them, depending on if i win or not. if hes paying, i try hard to impress him. I tryed to make it stand out from all the rest.

Sorry for the massive delay everyone! Work got unexpectedly crazy this week, so it took longer than it should have to determine a winner.

There was a lot of back and forth - there were quite a few terrific entries, which made it really difficult to choose. We've chosen a banner designed by roister2 - so he's the winner of this contest.

Thanks to everyone who entered! We were very pleasantly surprised by the level of response we got to this contest.

    Take care,

    Mike
