    If you are at the beginning, and you want to learn html, then you can start with notepad.

    If youn't care much about detail knowledge, go with Dreamweaver.

    If you're looking for a WYSIWYG HTML editor kompozer.net and trellian's tool comes up recommended quite often. Not sure of Trellian's url but just Google it.

    I would say, No any software can beat Dreamwever in web designing editors.

    Dreamweaver is noot free...which I believe was the original question.

    Get yourself a loaad of free css templates off the net and then use notepad to hack them around - its the best way to learn and free.

    Notepad++ just because it has syntax highlighting,
    and then open firefox and refresh when you save, no need for dreamweaver, waste of space and time.

    IMHO, Notepad ++ or Metapad, they're both good. Notepad ++ is or would be good for a beginner.
