Hi, i am having a few problems with bandwidth. I run an arcade site and 20 proxies on my server. The arcade site probley uses around 300mb max a day. Proxies are/were using 30GB a day. I have a 3mbit capped connection. So my problem is that i recently just limited the max file size and implanted hot linking for my php proxy. But the thing is I still did not see any decrease in bandwidth usage and my ping goes up and down. I also have a video site that is still in beta, (im currently the only user for video) So i tested to see what will happen if i stream a video and ping my server...to find out my ping went from 13ms to 450ms Is there a problem with server? How can i manage my bandwidth and keep my ping rate low? Please let me know thanks!
proxy is all about RAM. What is your server specs? Is it dedicated or VPS? Also, use mod_geoip and redirect all of your useless traffic such as China, Iran, Russia to another site or disneyland or send it to my site.
hey im on a dedicated server. 4GB of ram dual core 3.0ghz, im using probley max of 20% cpu, and still have around 2GB of memorey free. So im sure its not the server itself but bandwidth is just weired. And even when bandwidth is low the ping is high or even if there is 0 bandwidth being used and a video is streamed at 450kbps out of 3mbits the ping rate shoots up. let me know thanks! As for the traffic from china, iran, and russia, i am deciding to keep that at the moemnt, or will send it to my gaming site lol. But I have decreased max file size and disabled hotlinking. So yea let me know thanks!
hey i wrote it in bytes, i did a google converstion for this amount of MB to bytes and it told me lol
what did you limit it to 10mb? 15mb etc? as allowing for all countries I would run it lower as running at 10mb and higher will let them watch pretty any movie online. 5mb will allow for most youtube videos so keep lower tell you find a spot that works for you
Ah ok, ill try out 3mb and see what happenes right now its at 5mb and i saw no change really. If 3mb dosent work then i will just go to 1mb. But what about the pinging part? even if bandwdith is barley being used and i stream a video that uses 450kbps out of the 3mbit connection it raises the ping but 400ms :S let me know thanks for the help so far!
Hi, It sounds like you are saturating your connection. I think you are misunderstanding the units you are working with. 450ki/s is 460.8kB/s 460.8kB/s is 3686.4kbit/s which is 3.6864Mbit/s The problem before is you were comparing bits with Bytes. When your connection becomes saturated your connection latency will increase significantly.
JPC-NickO said exactly what I was about to. http://www.google.co.uk/search?clie...egabits+in+kilobytes&btnG=Google+Search&meta= Your 3 megabits per second is only 384 Kilobytes per second. One/two users can use it all up. Jay
Oh man...thanks this make much more sense. But cant a 3mbit connection allow upto 30GB per day of transfer? So when a user is streaming or downloading something at 384/kbs i will be pretty much using up my whole connection? is there away around this? because if this is the case 2 users will always be using the connection up leaving other users out. let me know thanks!
Yes, 31.640625 Gigabytes to be precise - if the port is used to full potential for every second of the 24 hour day. Once you hit the cap of 384 KB/s, there will be packet loss and high latency (as you've already experienced), and there is no way to circumvent this other than purchasing a faster port from the datacenter/host.
