I'm Shocked! Link building from same source

SEO is my weakness, but trying to get better at it. So this might sound obvious to some people, but it confused the hell out of me.

I participate in forums with "do follow," anchor text links in my signature. In some cases I have hundreds of posts and thought that each one counts as another back link - therefore helping my search rankings.

Well. I recently read that building links from the same source doesn't help any more than having one link. In other words, one link is just as good as a 1,000 from those forums.

    Is that really true?

so blog commenting on the same blog and submitting lots of articles to the same article directories for SEO puposes is a waste of time except for that first back link???

If you really want to simplfy things down, backlinks from different domains are more power than ones from the same domain.

    So 100 links from forums.digitalpoint is worse than 100 links from site.com, site2.com site3.com... site100.com

It still is a useful strategy because you get traffic plus backlinks and they all help but backlinks from different domains are more powerful.

Also the fact that there are often loads of links on forums in signatures which dilutes the strength of that backlink.

Useful response JosefSawyer. 1000 links from 1 site will not be as good as 1000 links from different sites (assuming similar quality). But that doesn't make your signature link useless. I would go for signature link and participate in forums even if they are nofollow. I get direct traffic and some people are kind enough to offer feedback etc. :)

In addition to traffic your site may get noticed and you may get potential backlinks from people who like your site. Indirect means to get links in my view

Not really. Some blogs that use commentluv plugin for example. A commentator needs to reach a certain number of comments only then he has his links become dofollow links.

For the article directories. Some webmasters or bloggers may take your articles from the article directories to put in their sites or blogs, therefore you cannot ignore that your submitted articles will not be taken by some new bloggers and webmasters to be put on their sites.

Not really, Google like BL from different site is true but 1 link from same as 1000 links is not true. Can get plenty off links from any site will not harm, especially from forums, blogs etc.

It's not exactly like that but obviously it's much better to have 1000 links from 1000 different domains.

it's better to have links from different domains, but that doesn't mean multiple links from same domain are useless.

if all the links from a single domain are pointing to the same page and have the same anchor text, the incremental effect won't be much.

however, if the links are pointing to different pages and have different anchor text, then such links would be much more effective.

for example, my sites already have a lot of links from digg.com.

I have noticed that whenever, a new page from one of my sites gets submitted to digg, it moves up sharply for less competitive keywords.

in spite of the fact that the site already had multiple backlinks from digg, the new link does affect the SERPs positively and thus cannot be considered useless.

It's not just about getting backlinks for SEO though is it? Some of those links will bring in traffic directly so the more the merrier, even from the same source.

ahh, yeah. it is a lot better to have backlinks from other websites. However, good seo also consists of the content on the websites and the keywords your using. Here are your 3 best friends for seo.

    siteexplorer, googlekeywords, semrush

These will do you good young skywalker

Yes, this is true. It's too bad you didn't know that before you spent so much time in one place. :(

Answer is clear already in this post.
I still have a question hope you can discuss further.
    Compare the effect:
    1) 100 backlinks from the same domain, each linking page have PR5.
    2) 100 backlinks from different domain(different IP),most linking pages have PR0,some have PR1.
Which will give me better result?
I have seen many sites have good PR and ranking, half of their backlinks are from the same domain,so I can come to a conclusion that sitewide link is helpful.

That depends on the type of result that you're after: visitors or PR.

With regards in having different links in a single site, it wouldn't harm your site. Because if it is, participating in forums like this will be useless. :D
