Well the first thing that I install is the instant post redirect you can find it at phpbb.com it stops that annoying page after you post. I also install 109 more bots using a script that you can find at phpbb.com I am to lazy to link to it but you will be able to find them. You may also wish to look up a quick reply

Just curious, any other good "must-have" mods for phpbb3?

Right now I have instant redirect after post, instant redirect after login, quick reply, multiquote and that's about it.

    Oh my.
Poster above me inspired me to join the forums lol.

I've been working with phpbb3 for awhile now. While it definitely improved verses phpBB2, many complain that it's 'bloated'. Ever heard the phrase, 'One mans feature is another mans bloat'? That's phpBB3 lol. This tends to only be an issue for large, high traffic forums though.

Still, you can improve performance by simply turning off features/options you don't necessarily need. When it comes to installing mods, only install the mods you truely need. Too many admins add on every mods they come across that 'sounded cool', not realizing that the mods may be poorly scripted. Even if properly scripted, too many mods can just add excessive additional processing time... which becomes a huge problem if your boards do start to gain traffic.

What inevitably happens is that these over modded phpbbs never get patched as updates are released. Why? Because they often would have to reinstall all of their mods, which may or may not be compatible. So, they run old versions and wonder why they can't stop bots, spam, attacks, etc. Previous poster claims it took him 2 months to get all his mods working as he wished: certain this is quite an exaggeration, but do you think he replays that entire experience every time an update is released?

So, the answer here is that there really are no 'must have' mods. If there's a specific functionality desired, google for it (there are more mods than those in phpbb mod database and forums) and see what others have said about it.

Don't mistake my 'bloat' remarks above as any ill feeling towards phpbb3: I love it. A properly managed phpbb3 can be a beautiful and powerful thing.

Only "must-have" is phpBB SEO, everything else comes down on your personal opinions.
