Visitors habitually ignoring Google ads?

A lot of site owners are complaining that making less and less from Adsense nowadays. No matter how they play around with their ad size, position, color schemes, etc., they still see their revenues declining.

I think part of this is that people are learning to habitually ignore contextual ads. Sure these ads are relevant to the material they're viewing, but they also know that they're, well, advertisements by companies going after their pocketbooks. When contextual ads first came out, I liked to click on them thinking that I'd find useful (and free) information on the landing pages. But once I had found out often enough that these sites are mostly trying sell me something, I learned to avoid them.

So what's next? What could be more effective than context ads?

I personally think Rich media & video ads should be able draw the attention. But not quite sure...

In-content text links always work better than ads external to content. Try affiliate links.

Sometimes when I find the ads interesting (with good sales title), I still click on it anyway to find out more information even though I know those are just ads.

Maybe the visitors are webmasters, target a non webmaster site.

This phenomenon is called ad blindness. Users become immune to Google ads after having seen them so many times...

I think the next big thing is having your own product. It just takes too many ad clicks nowadays to achieve your dreams.

When you mean your own product - is that about starting a contextual Ad Service all by ourself and then compete?

    I am kinda confused:confused:

The number of clicks depends on the target audience. Many people still have no idea about ads. They will click ads if they find them interesting. But incase a site's audience are webmasters then I guess the CTR will be low :)

If the ads are same as the content of your site, people will not ignore it. Visitors only ignore ads when it looks like ads, make it look like a part of your website and they will never ignore it. There is nothing after contextual ads, this is the only way to go :)

Google will continue to update the ads with different sizes/shapes. Google has a huge stake in the contextual ad business and if they can't keep the sales number on those up then their bottom line takes a hit. I think there will be a time that contextual ads are not good money makers, but that's a decade or two away.

like me, i always target the non savvy, non webmaster kinda of niche

especially in 'desperate niche' where there're searching for instant info on the fly..just give them 1/4 of the content, hey wanna read more...click the nice little blue link anywhere on my blog ;) hehe works like a charm..

I think he means using your site to sell your own goods and services rather than display ads for others. I think that's a very good suggestion. But then the nature of business would expand from just being a content provider to a provider of the goods or services.

You're right about more and more people ignoring ads...we may have to begin targeting other countries that may not yet be aware. :D

I certainly ignore ALL ads on the web, no matter how relevant they are...unless I'm leaving a "small tip" for something I find very useful on a site. ;).

I don't think this is the case, if it were, Adsense would be dead by now. Certain _types_ of visitors may be, but it is not universal.

I think users are more savvy now, and to be honest, the majority know that adsense will earn someone else money. It's mostly convenience that still keeps some people still clicking. I mean let's face it, with the URL on the ad, what's stopping a user just typing the url into the bar... i've noticed a lot more users are clicking graphical ads out of curiosity. It seems to catch their eye. However, the average user such as i get annoyed via video/audio ads since they eat up bandwidth on a lot of peoples internet packages

Many people actually have plugins for their browser which blocks out the ads altogether
