I just saw a rumor published by WebProNews that DMOZ is being sold to Best Of The Web.

    Shoemoney again!

He does this periodically, publishes a rumour guaranteed to rev up the traffic on his site.

It is just totally bogus linkbait :)

Lame publicity stunt by a team of shoemoney and botw.
shoemoney gets traffic/links to his site, and botw gains publicity as a web directory.

the story anyway of ODP getting sold to BOTW don't make much sense, if you think about it.

I agree with poseidon and trichnosis. Though the news doesn't make much sense now, it may bring quality to the odp if it really happens.

DMOZ is a directory where volunteers edit -- you have to respect their pro bono work and the time they spend receiving nothing in compensation.

You can't contest a free product or service such as the ODP, can you?

    Sure you can...

There is money in the ODP, and I'm not talking about the secret sales by editors... I'm talking about the resources that go into maintaining it. Staff, server, bandwidth, domain, etc... it's not all that much when you compare it to how much AOL has, but the costs are there. It's also a matter of what the common mindset of the ODP is, which is and has been going downhill for a loooooooooong time.

It would be in the best interest of the the current owners to push it off as someone elses problem. AOL is going downhill itself now that the world is no longer ran on dialup. In order to maintain what reputation they have, selling it could be a great move... let someone else fix it.

Does it need fixed? Sure it does... the place is hugely out of date, it's full of corrupt editors (and yes, they are there), and the rummors of it just keep getting worse and worse (and people are actually starting to back up their claims).

As a service? No, it's NOT a service... just ask the editors here. They serve NO ONE, though they do claim to serve the end user, but that is even questionable when you look at many of the posts here by current and past editors.

As a FREE service? Well, look at the wait times, and the evidence of paid listings...

There is even evidence that it's easier to get listed by NOT submitting.

I do not know if the sale is real or not, but honestly, if I were AOL, I'd certainly wash my hands of such a cesspool...

Should I take it that you no longer wish to be associated with DMOZ in any way?

    Am I AOL?

Thanks for not reading the whole post so that you could reply to only part of the last line.

As for answering your question though, sorry, I'll continue till it's cleaned up... and at the rate of the cleaning, it may be a while ;)
