Just been accepted by AdSense but a little confused

I registered for AdSense earlier today and was accepted 4 hours later for the website in my signature.

After repeatedly reading the TOS and many many DP threads (now have very sore eyes!) please could someone answer a couple of questions.

    • No Google ad may be placed on any non-content-based pages.
My site displays image links - it's what the site does! Is this content? I want to put AdSense Ads to the right of the homepage (currently the small white bar on the right - going to make it bigger!) and on the pages after the user clicks on a category.

    • No Google ad may be placed on pages published specifically for the purpose of showing ads, whether or not the page content is relevant.
Would I be ok here since I effectively display advertising links. My guess is that this is ok since someone at Google would have looked at my site?

    Webmaster Guidelines
    • Do not participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighbourhoods" on the web as your website may be affected adversely by those links.
Is it ok to get links so long as you don't use a service like erm linkmarket, I am currently working to get some backlinks to increase PR. I don't know of the terms web spammers or bad neighbourhoods please could someone explain.

Basically I want to do things right since I appreciate Google allowing me to use their service.

Thanks for any help - new to all this but learning fast :)

Hey, that's a good idea for a site. I'll add some when I have a moment.

I don't think you need worry at all about putting ads on the site. However you may find the ads are not appropriate for the content, because they don't know what they are looking for - if there are no words of content, Google don't know which ads are suitable to show. You might like to search on 'section targetting' to find out more.

Re spammers and bad neighbourhoods, you will know if you do it. Links from directories, other websites on related subjects etc are fine (and necessary). Exchanging links with 500 pharmaceutical companies and other completely unrelated sites is not a good thing. If a site markets itself as being able to find you either loads of links or loads of traffic it is almost always best avoided.

Could you add some words about each category? A paragraph or two maybe to give the ads a bit of direction?

    Fun site, submitted 2 sites.

    Interesting idea, hope it succeeds.

Thanks guys for your positive comments.

I'll register with a bunch of directories soon.

That's a great idea about adding some words - I'll have to read up a bit more to fully understand how it works.

I'm not going to overload the pages with ads but just keep it simple. I tend to think that sites overloaded with ads are not a good idea and put people off from re-visiting. At the same time nicely placed relevant ads make a site look more profesional - I occasionally click them too!
