A theoretical question on dial-up and IP addresses

For instance let say that today I have "this and this" IP address (and of course, I log-in to Google AdSense with it etc.), and since I am conecting with dial-up account, I have a new IP address each time I am connecting (i.e. I'll have a totally different one each new session, but in the same "range"); so I am curious, what if tomorrow some other user of my Volja ISP will be assigned "this and this" particular IP address and by some strange coincidence he/she will visit my site and click on my AdSense ads. What would Google say about this ??

I believe they they look into screen resolutions, explorer version e.t.c. before taking a decision. Then again, they can't ignore the IP address if it is happening every now and then. All I would say is NOT to promote your website locally.

just don't click on your own ads or ask someone to do it and you will be fine...

as an adwords advertiser I hate it when kids try to go around the rules to steal from advertisers.

Google uses various means besides IP address. The chances of someone getting the same IP and making a bunch of clicks on your site are extremely small. Don't do anything wrong and you don't have to worry about the IP address. Changing your IP address does not get around click fraud detection - sooner or later they will catch it.

That's what I tell all my local competition as well....

Joking aside, local advertising for a website is fine. I've done it for years for myself and clients and have never had a single issue.

As others have stated just play by the rules and don't worry about every possible scenerio that could potentially get you banned.

Well my "friend", your guess is unfortunately WRONG ...

I am also not sure why are you all suggesting things like: "don't click on your own ads" and "just play by the rules" etc., since I was asking about one totally different thing which has actually nothing to do with me clicking on my own ads; infact, I did ask about that already in the "A more or less theoretical question on clicking one's own ads" thread, and even though I wrote clearly that it was/is just a "theoretical" question, folks just didn't want to believe that I AM NOT SO STUPID/IGNORANT to click my own ads.

P.S. -- But yet once again, that has NOTHING to do with my worries about SOMEONE ELSE coincidentally having the same IP I had and clicking on my ads. I know however that chances are small, but I am worried anyways, and asking to be 100 % sure; I guess that is what this forum is all about, right ?!!

Google has much more sophisticated means of determining users beyond just the ip address you are on.

Dial-up access and rotated ips have existed well before Google did. They are not suprised nor confused by these things.

Yes like aeiouy says there means will be much more sophisticated. One(surely there are many) of which I will guess will be cookies. So even if someone with the same IP you had yesterday clicked on one of your ads without a cookie present that was dropped on your PC when you logged into adsense there shouldn't be a problem.

I know user can delete cookies and change IP's and Google knows that aswell but I think for this kind of problem this would be a good first line of defense.

It doesn't matter if you delete cookies, change ip, change OS, etc. It's not about the software.

My theory is and I keep repeating this, they check every hardware information they could find about your PC.
