Why is it that its difficult to list my website to DMOZ, I keep on submitting my site to them but after more than 2 month it is still not listed, is it just me?

No, it's not just you. DMOZ is the largest free directory around. Smaller directories can get 200-300 submissions per day easily, so imagine how many DMOZ gets. DMOZ also uses volunteer editors, which means they are not paid. Some categories do not have editors, so the wait may be a very long time until an editor signs up for that area.

There's a couple DMOZ editors at this forum that I know of, and they could better explain the reason why it takes so long to get listed. But I do know that a DMOZ listing is one link out of many that sites need to rank well. Submit your site to DMOZ and forget about it. Two months is a short wait. They don't like people submitting the same site more then once.

    Good luck...

Submit once and forget about it. If you keep submitting your web site you will just keep pushing it to the bottom of the queue.

You shall be lucky enough and have a good site to be indexed by dmoz.org. I tried 5 times to submit my site without success 3 years ago, and finally i gave up.

Two months is a very short time to wait for DMOZ. I've submitted one of my sites to them three times since 2006 and no luck yet. I guess they don't have an editor in the category I submitted my site. I'm seriously thinking of signing up to become their editor in that category, but I'm literally too busy right now for that.

While waiting for DMOZ I kept submitting that site to other little-known directories and now it has gotten PR 2. However, I cannot give up on DMOZ, since a back link from there means a lot to me.

I have been a DMOZ editor for a while now and will try to explain my best while it takes so long. But, don't let that factor sway you into not submitting your site to DMOZ. Your site will eventually be reviewed and if its is a quality site, it will be added.

When I first joined, my category had about 200 unreviewed submissions. I did reviewed 10 about every other day. Adding on average 1 of every 15 links. So, that was a big surprise to me being handed a huge pile of links to review. And it does take a good 2 minutes to review each site, many times more. For my category, I need to ensure that the sites I approve are

    A) Quality sites which can contribute something unique to the ODP. One of my categories is the Web Design Templates category. If a site sells reseller templates, they will be rejected. Thats the #1 reason for rejection in my category. Your content needs to be unique!
    B) We have to make sure the site is not an affiliate site. While this may seem like its an easy process, its not as some sites have interfaces which make it seem as a legit site but its really an affiliate.
    C) We need to browse the whole site for incomplete images and broken links.
    D) We have to edit the description almost every time as well as the title. The day someone submits a perfectly correct title and description, I will cry tears of joy.

Its a lengthy process. But, thats why DMOZ has the reputation and PR that it has today. Because it has a strict submission process. All the small PR directories are good for picking up a PR4 backlink, but thats their only use. People actually use DMOZ to find a site of a certain genre. Thats why I love working for them.

Any more questions, just shout 'em out.

Mike, if you've submitted your site more than once in two months STOP NOW.

Additional submissions won't improve your chances of being listed, and, they may well irritate the editor in your category.

It would be more productive to get links with good anchor text in relevant forums, blogs, or articles.

Relax! Your site will eventually be reviewed. You will be listed or you won't; there is nothing more to do.

    Dear All,
Some of my sites are listed in DMOZ but I really don't think it makes a difference. DMOZ listing does not even figure in the google links for that web site.

    chanch,

Post a link to your site here and let us have a look. I'm sure many people here would benefit from knowing what a good site looks like.

Gee that makes SENSE! THAT's quality thinking!! Why haven't I seen that for MYSELF!!!

A dmoz editor in say, SHOPPING, like me, who has no SHOPPING-related websites or SHOPPING-related clients of his own, refuses to list anybody in SHOPPING because they might be competition. Therefore NOTHING GETS LISTED IN SHOPPING EVER !!!!

It's brilliant! A wonderful plan! And it explains so much about dmoz!

I bow to your superior intellect.

    You ARE the MAN!

Actually that accusation is not uncommon. Corruption exists, you're a fool to think otherwise. That being said I haven't seen any evidence of corruption in dmoz, only people that are frustrated (and I understand their frustrations) making accusations.

The accusation is not uncommon, but I have yet to see anyone post anything that remotely looks like evidence. As in the example above where s/he states that editors don't want competition and thus would not list competitor web sites.

In theory if it were the case then it would be easy to prove by finding a category where the owner of the web sites is the same person. Has that ever happened? Not that I am aware of.

As you say corruption does likely exist, but from what I have seen and heard they do act swiftly when compelling evidence is provided.
