Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar.

well to cut a long story short, the internet is based on duplicate content...take a look at google and yahoo news!!!! just your site can't ALL be based on duplicate content....and you have to set your www preference in your .htaccess file...

Yah ofcourse, your points are perfectly correct. however, this duplication we are talking about are for those who pick up the whole article or huge chunks and just simply copy it on their blogs or sites. They try to take advantage of others hardwork. This has to be penalized somewhere or else this business would have no control and ethics.

That is what SE try to do.

Thanks for the info. I agree with some of the other posters who say that duplicate content is something that is worried about too much.

Would me taking my unique articles I have written and submitting it to different article sites, blogs, etc with my link be considered "Duplicate Content"? Is this a bad approach?

If you are linking back to the original content, then search engines would not consider it as duplication of content. Just for clarity, there is nothing called 'duplicate content penalty'. Duplicate content is just filtered out by search engine algorithms, meaning search engines would only show the original content matching the search query. I wrote an article on this topic a few days ago. check it out.

You started a thread on it and you have said something better than that. Anyways it is a well composed post however I could not figure out the reason for the change in heart - you seem to be an expert in gadgets and not SEO.

major search engines avoid duplicate contents. duplicat content means same contents are used on other site. every website have unique content for good ranking and traffics.
