Hi. In my humble opinion, i'll think that domain names are not that important in SEO. Unless you want to see instanteous results, its best to choose a domain name that your consumers and users can relate to. Choosing a right domain name (not necessary containing your keywords) could potentially result in a stronger branding in the long run

I've only been doing SEO for a year or so professionally but I'm very skeptical about how effective it is to have the keyword in the domain name in competative markets.

A certain advantage is that when people link to you without anchor text, the keyword in the domain will tell Google what to rank you for.

In less competative markets, it's a very good way of getting ahead in the SERPS - e.g. exsovietweaponsassextoys.com

I wonder why having keywords in the domain name is effective? Could it be at least partly due to the greater likelihood of links to the domain automatically including the keywords also? In the end relevant links with good link text will win out over the domain name.

Good anchor text is always advisable. but what if you dont have control on anchor text linking to you from external domains like blogs, comments or some forums. In that case the keyword in domain name helps.
Also it is not necessary to have one website to run your business, You can have multiple websites for same business. One website could be primary with your own domain while other websites could be optimized for various keywords, one or two each. For example you can have one website for your first and second targetted keyword with lot of text and information. you can have other website for your third and fourth targetted keyword.
This has been a trend now to own multiple sites.
I know one company in my city, they have over 40 websites with domain name as keyword and they are all ranked well on google.
they do regular SEO on all those sites to retain the SEO.
End of that day what matters is the business and leads, no matter if they come from one domain or multiple domains.

You are correct saying that SEO is important, no dispute on that.
As SEO is no more an unplanned thing, people think of SEO much in advance before website, at that stage thinking of domain inline to the target keywords can help drastically.

Lets say I have a domain called allcarinformations.com and that after a couple months/years I decided to target the specific keyword "Car Deals" which is probably really competitive. Could I buy the domain name cardeals.com (lets say it would be available) and redirect the url to my original domain allcarinformations.com?

Is there any chance that the new domain name cardeals.com get ranked higher than my original domain for the keyword "Car Deals"?

Redirection from one domain to other is not good in SEO, that can black list you on google. So if you want to do something in future, do plan now and book the domain, I am sure till the time you are ready to launch the site, your domain has a rank.
