In a word, links. (According to the original pagerank algorithm and commonly accepted current knowledge).

    Yet.. hits can help..
if you get hits.. it will give you a higher chance of link baiting..

so your best bet is to do an investment of hits.. as buying links is a big risk..

LINKS.....LINKS......and more LINKS! That is it. Hits have no effect on PR, its only links pointing to your site.

Hits really cannot affect anything, those are the total pageviews by all users, or by 1 user. Imagine I'm running a rotator and generating 5000 views per day just from my computer, hilarious eh? Let's be awarded by Google for self-viewing our sites, NOT.

All it matters for the PR is Links.

your example is idiotic but still the PR fact is correct.

PR is influenced by quality backlinks. you can get a million backlinks but still rank lower than your competitor if your competitor's site has lot of quality backlinks from authority websites in the same niche :)

The higher the number of backlinks (from high PR pages), the better your PR would be. Hits rarely matter imo

Question: How do PR and google SERP relate? Or is this a trade secret?

For PR you need only links from other hight PR sites no matter related or not. Related links are for ranking.

its mainly backlinks that boost your PR. but if you have lot if hit, means you have some good content for which people will link to your site sometimes as well. so its both.
