Is this ruining my SEO?

Hey guys. I run this Britney Spears fansite, and im stuck on the first position of page 2 on google for main keyword for months.

My site validates, its optimized and everything, except the pop up and one ad that i run that doesn't let my page validate, and i even think it gets slower.

Maybe this is killing my SEO? should i remove it?

Before you do anything......do the link command with the #1 website..and see what backlinks they're using.

Also, view their domain age compared to yours....old is always better

 

Validation wont make any difference to your rankings on the search engines. However in terms of website usability pop-ups can be annoying so make a point of deciding whether to use it.

 

most people use the pop after the person has been viewing the site for a minute or right when the customer leaves

 

always apply experimental approach on your site, focus on those effective techniques and eliminates which are not!

If it was annoying as people say, then you did a good thing to get rid of it.
If it annoys people, search engines have a way of knowing.

Pop ups are annoying. Remove it just for that alone.

 

Google relies heavily on backlinks to determine ones position in the serps for keywords.

Doing a search using allinanchor, you are positioned appropriately for the number of backlinks with "britney spears" anchortext. Go to Google and check it out...

Try to increase your backlinks first. If your position raises with the allinanchor operator, so should your site in the serps. If your site in the serps lags significantly, then try some onpage seo. Make only minor adjustments on your site so that you can monitor the effects.

With such a competitive niche, I'm assuming you will need a lot of backlinks to overtake top positions. It's a lot of work, but well worth it for the traffic her names brings.

What are your traffic numbers for being 2nd page for 'britney spears'? Just curious with that type of competitive keyword would pull in 2nd page.

hum page 2 for britney spears is about 500 uniques. Page one is like 10 times more :S

I see your website at #15 on Google for the KW Britney Spears. You can easily get links to it with the right KWs and your site can be up on page 1. No need to hire any SEO services for this. Sending you a PM with some ideas now

Anyways, i tried a plugin called "the post excerpts" but i saw a drop on my rankings. From position 15 to position 20. so i guess the excerpt is not really the thing i just keep
