If you can give us the url, we could do some research and then tell what would be your chance :)

There is no number of links to get any set PR. The more links on a page, the less PR each page receives. Free directories tend not to have a high PR, and usually have many links on them. I also think google ignores many low quality directories. The chances of getting a PR5 from free directories is slim to none, and I would say impossible (for purposes of discussion) for a PR6.

it's almost impossible, i'd say, to get it only from directories. if you also do link exchange with high PR pages, the chances are much higher

But a lot higher if you get high PR, industry relevant websites to link to you without having to link back!

DSB is right... get relevant one way links and kick some butt with original content. A 5 wouldn't be that hard to get if you did that.

There are too many people looking for the same free lunch for it to be that easy nowadays,

    To answer your question

    1. More free directories of quality relating to your site topic than are currently available. I did a trawl the other day and many directories that were free a short time ago are charging now.

    2. For Google updates go to the source www.mattcutts.com/blog/explaining-algorithm-updates-and-data-refreshes/
    he'll tell you ;)

"just by placing it in many many free directories??" Read the google trechnology page. What makes you think that your website deserves a page rank like this by simply taking the cheap & easy way out. Sorry to be blunt, but this doesn't fly in 2007.

I have a question as well that relates to this topic
Is it possible to get Page Rank 4 on a free directory? If yes then can you make it paid after that and continue doing SEO to go up to the PR5-6's?

Anything is possible. A PR5 is about 6X harder than a PR4. SEO has nothing to do with PR - it is 100% determined by incoming links to the page. I just saw a site where some idiot spammed every free directory and blog and is showing about 6,000 backlinks with yahoo - all those low quality "free" links (and many were likely nofollow) gave him a PR5.

It only takes one link to get a PR5 (a good PR6 - and it being the only outgoing link) and it would seem to me you would be better off buying some quality links than spending a bunch of time trying to get a thousand free links - but it all depends on what you value your time at.

Thanks for the explanation :D, I have to do some more research and get rid of all my free directories and concentrate on 1 :D.

make a good site that people want to link to and it really is not hard to get to PR 5. PR 6 is quite a bit harder. good luck.

try getting few thousand backlinks, you probabaly get PR5. PR6 is difficult to get with out quality backlinks.

there are free directories, just look for pr2+ directories, there are many free ones. also do link exchange, that might help.
apart from directorys, you can write articles, and insert a link in the article. write quality articles, then it will be easy to get accepted.

try link bait etc, but still pr6 will not be easy, pr4 you can expect.:)

I'm surprised no one mentioned article marketing to gain PR. Google loves article directories. You could create an article campaign with an article a week, and that would help you tremendously. If you did that until the next PR update I'm sure you would be PR5-6, if you coupled that with directory inclusions.

But, what would be your point to get PR up to 5-6, are you trying to sell links? PR isn't as important as gaining in the SERP's.

Depends on the pagerank of the sites you are submitting.
Different other ways to increase PR include:
Buying links from high pageranked and well indexed sites.
Blog posts in different well indexed blogs
    Article posts
    Word cloud
Some link exchange and 100 others..

Be careful that you don't focus all your energies on PR building that when you do get your PR6 you are discouraged that you get no more traffic and it was basically a waste of time. Build up your rankings and get traffic. Not sure about you but I get purchases from visitors not PR.
