    It looks like these particular "articles" are hosted on more than 5 or even 10 sites, and even the documents themselvs (i.e. the .html files) are named identically !!

    Things like this are not unusual on any system which includes billions of pages of documents such as the internet or daily newspapers.

    There are websites dedicated to content syndication -- whether free or paid content. While webmasters can edit those pages, they do not always.

    There are sites, such as my company's, which allow other sites to display their headlines -- as long as no effort is made to change them. That is done using RSS or javascript feeds.

    For a fee, some sites will allow you to display their content in your template, obviously with the title and all formatting entirely intact.

    Duplicate content can serve many legitimate purposes.

    My company views the limited use of some of its content as a marketing opportunity and a way of attracting people to our websites. In turn, we use a certain amount of syndicated content and/or material to which we have obtained republication rights to make our site "stickier" by meeting more of the information needs of our visitors.
