Why did you become a DMOZ editor?

I do see in some of the primers where it says basically - start editing, have fun, learn. My edit problems were one like a missing period at the end of one of the sites that was submitted by the public. There might have been a dozen sites I processed that were as much as a year or two old so volunteer editing should be appreciated not berated.

I did reactivated myself and am at it again. My old categories were still mine and they are once again up to date. We'll see how it goes.

 

If that is the only thing that I notice when I look at a category (just one missing full stop) - then I probably wouldn't mention it (except in a cat check) and would just correct it. But it is in the guidelines - under proper punctuation.

Now if it's that way because it was suggested by the public - that isn't a good reason because editors are supposed to rewrite descriptions so that they are guideline compliant.

 

The main reason I volunteered was to see what the "competition" for my site was and the direction that the "industry" was going. I guess I am middle of the road on ethics. I dont feel it is right to ban my competition from the directory, but I dont think I would suggest my competitors site so they could be listed.

Interesting. This from someone who still has the word "shepherd" misspelled on her own website despite having the error pointed out to her at least twice before.

You don't see the irony in someone who calls herself an editor not being able to edit her own site content? Especially after I've pointed that out to you twice before?

lmocr's daughter does that website, and her daughter does not edit for DMOZ so I don't see any irony at all.

 

But I fixed them for you - and hopefully you won't see her "most famous" (at least to me) error:

I have fixed the errors before - but when sites are redesigned, errors can crop up, especially when the person typing believes the word is spelled correctly "their way". I don't mind constructive criticism - but comparing my daughter's spelling errors to my ability to edit (or provide constructive criticism to other editors) is not constructive in the least.

My son hasn't figured out how to use a telephone book and he's only 23 - do you have any "constructive" criticism for him?

There is very little interaction among editors unless you feel like spending hours in the forums discussing nitpicky little details.

I've been an editor at DMOZ for 2 years. I started out trying to add new categories as often as possible. It wasn't too difficult to get new ones from time to time.

Then last year I encountered a really cranky meta editor who gave me a lot of s**t for some minor problem. I relinquished all but 3 of my topics and stopped doing more than nominal editing just to keep my account open.

They really need to deal with people's attitudes if they plan to stay in business much longer. One of the reasons people leave is because there are too many people there with bad attitudes.

I joined DMOZ partly because it was a new challenge - many people said it would be so hard to get in. It took about 3 weeks to get my application accepted.

The other reason I joined was to try to get my own sites in faster. Hah! Don't believe the myth of editor privilege - I have a site I submitted 2 years ago this month, and it's still sitting in review.

"Submit it and forget it!" is the way to go with DMOZ.

1. who is supposed to approve my site before it goes to Dmoz derictory.
2. is it better to select directory where your site may potentially be listed (and thus try to involve dodgy ways of your site promotion) or is it better select a derictory you have nothing to do with in tearms of promoting your own sites?
3. how is work between editors of the samedirectory interlaced?

 

I needed to support my crack/cocaine habit, so when I heard I could make $350 for listing a site in a directory, I figured all my problems were solved!!!!

i have tried to become but they did not accept me .

 

I tried 4 times before I was accepted. Knowing what I do now, if I had followed the guidelines, I would have been accepted on the 1st try.

 

Offtopic. How do you apply to become an editor? apply.cgi is not working anymore

 

Everybody wants to be part of this community bur meanwhile everybody wants to list sites' in good directory ( like dmoz )
