Facebook now drives more traffic than Google? For how long?

I recently read in the news that Facebook now gets more traffic than Google. Wow, Facebook really is some success story.

How about making some friendly wagers on how long Facebook will last, before it's downfall will come?

I know it sounds impossible now, but look what happened to Myspace. I guess all networking sites like these have a lifespan...

I give it less than 5 years... Something bigger and better are bound to come along sooner.

    What do you guys think?

Anything's possible in this crazy internet world. Facebook has a strong team and with their market leadership are poised to last. Myspace had their share of mistakes so if Facebook doesn't keep their best and brightest management team the same fate could befall them.

Their transition to an advertising platform without alienating their user base or invading their privacy is the key minefield they'll have to tread. How well they do it will determine their fate.

Facebook is not going anywhere anytime soon. BUT, everything fades eventually as new things popularize

Also once you build your fb page up to 25 followers you get to choose a unique keyword name for your page. Fan pages are very cool.

It seems that Facebook will still be here for a while. I wonder if Google will bounce back.

Facebook might be getting more traffic than Google, but they're not a threat. Google is a search engine, and Facebook is a social networking site. The only reason Facebook is getting more traffic is because people come back there every day to talk to their friends, see what their friends are up to, play games, upload photos, etc. There is a reason for them to come back every day, multiple times a day. Google is where people go to find things, for research, shopping, entertainment or whatever. People use Google to find things, while Facebook is more of a "home" to hang out on.

As for marketing, who would you rather be targeting? People who are looking for a website to fulfill their needs, or someone who is there to tend to their digital farm? Just because Facebook has more traffic doesn't mean marketers should abandon their search engine efforts and start chasing Facebook users. They are two large audiences with entirely different intentions. While FB marketing has it's merits, it's not going to replace Google as an effective marketing area until they start acting as a search engine.

Facebook only gets more traffic then Google for a few days at a time, not consistently like Google does. Google is always going to be incredibly popular and a source of a lot of information. Facebook is just a social networking site that will meet its demise similar to myspace.

I would dig a little deeper and not alway take things as face value. Facebook does not get more traffic than Google. The comparisons that have been made recently were comparing ALL of facebook to a PORTION of Google. Not really a valid comparison... apples vs. oranges. Danny Sullivan went on a rant about it here and rightfully so. The people putting out stats like this rarely explain "exactly" what is being compared to what.

    According to alexa.com they're still a runner-up.

But - talking about numbers - these are in fact HUGE: Facebook Facts & Figures

Sometimes I wish facebook had some kind of good search the web feature that could compete with google. Probably not going to happen. I don't like facebook that much, but I wouldn't mind seeing them put a dent in google's traffic and user base if they had some similar tools and features. But google is more webmaster techy, and facebook is more social yappers that don't know how to do anything if facebook can't do it for them with a click of the mouse. I don't think some of the facebook users even know how to post a link if they can't copy and paste it and have facebook parse the output for them.
