The rep system should be tweaked slightly. It only costs 1 negative reputation to give 15 negative reps, if that is your rep weight. Should really cost the same to give as you are giving. -Michael
Hey mvandemar, I think you'll be better off not talking about rep. After starting this thread you'll probably be showered with "red" rep
if someone makes a retarded post and you let them know thru rep, why pay for it the same? I think 1 point is good, just to make sure you really want to give the rep
But that's just it... costing one rep will make someone who only has a few rep think about it, yes. If the point is indeed to make someone think about it, then it should be proportionite is all I'm saying. I didn't know about the 5 max thing, but still, same concept. If you have over 1000 rep, then giving out 20 negative reps can be done without a second thought. If those 20 are going to cost you 100 points though, it would. Well, moreso than if it only cost you 20 anyways. And I wasn't talking about me specifically, I was talking about something I noticed in the system. I'm not saying someone should modify my rep, I'm talking about the way it works in general. It's not so much of making it fair as it is making it work as intended. That's all. -Michael
if the rep system implemented like you are suggesting, Dude you'd be the first to start complaining about it
If you 'earned' that 1000+ reps, then why should it start 'costing' you more to dish out rep? If anything, the 'cost' should go down, for your efforts. Most of the high-rep members have high rep because they are trusted and knowledgable. They wouldn't be the ones bringing people down with needless red rep. So if such a members reckons a red rep is deserved, and it so happens to count for -5, then IMO its probably warranted, based on their credentials. Not that I personally see rep as meaningful, real-life credentials but at least in the forum it probably says enough.
I like the new system and think it's fair. You don't want to make impossible to dish out red. You just want people to do it for a good reason. And if no one can hit you for more than 5, that's good too (though even getting hit for 5 can hurt).
If the only reason people de-repped (dereped? de-reped?) someone was because they made a post with bad info, then yeah, wouldn't really matter. That's not actually how it works in a social environment such as this though. And yes, I know it's not that important, not trying to start a crusade or anything... was just a suggestion. -Michael <edit>what if it was scaled to how much you were derepping (3rd spelling), defaulting to 1? Reserve the bigger ones for really stupid or disagreeable stuff?</edit>
I've learned not to mention rep anymore unless im in a nice forum like the Directroies forum. People there are nice and appreciate me
I realise its a needed thing to have, but I don't really like the fact that I lose reputation if I give negative reputation, so I just don't use it and probably won't till I get a high enough reputation for me to be respectable around here ^^;;
Yeah Shawn, how do you know? It's almost like, you're able to answer all the questions. Like, what, do you OWN this place or something? You think that just cause you share the same username as the domain you're special or something. -Michael
