Wordpress really needs to allow us to have a way to branch sub-pages off of WP pages....I hate how we're forced to branch posts off of categories, it really screws with site navigation (for instance, mysite.com/cars vs. mysite.com/categories/cars)

Google Alerts sends WP blog in Blogs subscription and Joomla and other cms in simple google alerts. Thats show Wodpress is just a blog and Joomla is a CMS.

Maybe a plugin could enable the features that you want?

Google's opinion is only worth as much as each DP member's opinion here. Although in its current state, WordPress is more of a blogging platform than a full-blown CMS, it might change in the future. Google may also change how it views WP.

IMHO, WP should be considered a CMS because it has the capability of CMS and it functions like one (thus, it is a CMS, albeit a light-weight one). To support my argument to differ from samlocalguy's view, check out the list below:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_content_management_systems

P.S. I never know there are so many CMS(s).

I'm often amused at those who can't conceive that Wordpress is a CMS.

Does anyone really understand the meaning of the term?

    CMS = Content Management System.

The basic explanation of a CMS is that it separates the content from the formatting of that content. If you've ever created HTML pages from scratch, you know that the content is the same as the formatting - it's one document, and the formatting is part of the content.

Anything that uses a MySql database to hold the content, and treats that content as a completely separate product from the layout of that content, is by very definition, a CMS.

    Wordpress is a CMS, period.

Now, CMS's can 'target' certain functions better than others... Wordpress does blogging better than any other platform (IMO), Drupal does communty sites better than any other platform (again, IMO). I'm sure that Joomla does something better than any other - but my experience has been limited to just a few platforms, and Joomla has never been one of them.

If you want to lay out information in a blogging style, or a newpaper type of style, and want excellent SEO, choose Wordpress and never look back.

If you need a more flexible way to present content, perhaps a more community oriented website, multiple authors, database fields, then go ahead and pick Drupal or Joomla, and never look back.

But stop thinking of only your favorite CMS as being a "CMS", and everything else as secondary or as a 'wannabe' CMS That's simply not true.

    Content MANAGEMENT system.

I totally agree. You can feel the power of Wordpress if you use it long enough. On the first install, Wordpress does look too simple. You need to do some dev or install plugins to make it look like a powerfull website not a blog.

We are now using Wordpress for all of our SEO optimized websites. It has proven to be as flexible as we need, and all of our sites are W3C compliant, accessible, code is error free and all have a high degree of usability.

Sure it is, for some uses.
If you are looking for a *real* CMS try Drupal. :)

    ps.
Has anyone in this thread tested the WP-ecommerce mod?
    Does it work well?

To answer the original question by the OP, WordPress was originally conceived as a blog software but it is versatile enough to be adapted as a CMS and works well enough in that direction. Joomla may be conceived as a CMS right from the start, but I find it too bulky and redundant to be of any real use.

wordpress is still a blogging platform, It is the custom theme design which make it loook like a CMS.
Else they still beleive its a BLoging toll, but can be used as a CMS through theme design.

like other's said, CMS = Content Management System = A content management system (CMS) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text (from wiki).

Blog, Portal, forum, gallery and bla, all with CMS base and other name to serve different purpose ...
