You must've missed the sale here last week where the DMOZ site lost it's listing because it was publically sold.

ZOINKS ... now that I re-read, it may have been delisted because it had a Coming Soon page up instead of content, but the timing is quite coincidental.

There are a number of cases of sites losing their DMOZ listing upon sale - especially when it is a featured part of the sale. It isn't automatic, but that's why you'll see some auctions that won't post the url. I have one site that is DMOZ listed and the focus changed about two years and really should be moved to another category, but I don't want put in a request to move it - anything that increases the chance of an editor looking at a site opens the door for removal - and I'm even an editor.

I don't think a site would get removed just because it is being sold, but it could be looked at by someone else other than who approved it and removed because they didn't feel it should be listed. I had a site removed in a category I edit after it was listed on another forum - and I don't know who did it or why, but I would bet the listing caused another editor to review the listing.

Please link to the "number of cases" you are referring to.

I keep asking because I believe this is just an internet rumor... but I am not saying I couldn't be mistaken. I just want confirmation. If it is a rumor people need to stop promoting it without proof!

I've sold DMOZ listed sites before and made that very clear in the sales thead on MULTIPLE forums at once and the site was never delisted.

What does the owner using the DMOZ listing as a selling point have to do with the quality of the site or it's deserving to be listed in DMOZ? That doesn't even make sense when you think about it.

    Towards Mjewel

If your site is as it is when it was listed at dmoz or may be improved (like i had and italian version too) i dont see any reason why it should be removed. caz they need to respect there editors if one approves a site and its not changed at all so why another editor comes in and un-approve it

this way they are them self hurting the credibility of there editors

correct me if i am wrong

It has nothing to do with the quality of the site or if it is deserving to be listed. Carefully read what I said - Any listing of a site brings increases attention to it.

You need to understand that DMOZ is really a collection of individuals, and there are many sites that do not belong in DMOZ - and many that do. There is no black and white set of rules for inclusion and if you ask 100 editors about a particular site, you are not going to get the same opinion from all of them. What one editor approves, another can remove. This happens ALL the time.

There is a 3 year backlog on a lot of categories, and some sites stay listed for no other reason than lack of manpower. Anything you do to draw attention to your site is going to increase the chance that an editor is going to look at the site. If a particular individual happen to feel it wasn't properly listed, they can remove it (depending on their editor status). There is no such thing as a permanent DMOZ listing. There are sites that get added by one editor and then removed by another.

There was a site listed on SitePoint that was listed in a category I edit. Some other editor removed the listing. You aren't told why. I supose some editor was looking at sites for sale and then decided it shouldn't have been accepted in the first place. Even as an editor for the category, I don't why it was removed.

I never said DMOZ removes sites that are put up for sale - for the reason they are up for sale. There isn't a good-ole boy system with DMOZ where all editors are buddies and where they all respect anothers judgement. As with any operation of thousands of people, there are some nut cases who are on a mission to uphold their personal standard of what DMOZ is. They feel that any there should be no commercialization of DMOZ - i.e. a site running adsense must be a MFA site and not worthy of inclusion.

You haven't had a problem and I believe you, but it has happened to others. Had the person mentioned above not advertised his site's url, it would probably still be listed because there isn't enough time to review listed sites.
