I have felt the same way lately... too many self promotional threads in the General Chat section.

Don't get me wrong DP is a great place... but the general chat section isn't what it used to be.

I'd gladly go down to a post count of 3 to have decent general chat threads again.

I'm actually glad you responded in this thread Shawn. Now hopefully I can return back to my normal postings.

Maybe I'll run an experiment. We'll ban Nintendo and Mike for a week and see what happens. No more "I'm a wacko" and, "I agree" posts. ;)

I'm thinking of bringing this back too.

If you ban them for a week... they wouldn't know what to do with themselves. lol

Oh yeah... also, starting right now any threads about "help me out and vote for me or digg my site", etc. goes to Buy/Sell/Trade -> Services. So if anyone sees any, please use the report post thing.

Excellent idea. They did that at one time at WPW, actually.

I'm serious about using the "Report This Post" link. It can be for misplaced threads, not just spam.

*gulp* *cries* :( I'll try to be good!!! :(

I've made very FEW wacko threads!!!!! Since I registered, I made a measly 12 wacko threads!! (13 if you count the GoogleGuy confession!!) Admit it, you guys liked the Audio and the Interview Nintendo threads!!!

Usually others make the threads, then I just like to have fun!! Lifes too short, have fun!!!

er, um, er....If I was banned, then I would be forced to actually work on my web sites!!! And who would help those out that have mod_rewrite questions??!! It was only maybe five threads that we liked to have fun in, over the last few days!!! :(

Or make that wacko board, then every one that's not a wacko can stay out of that board, and move all the wacko threads there, then every one will be happy and live happly ever after!!!! :)

Tis the season to be jolly...Bah Humbug.

DP ranks # 7 for "longest maggot bath". Where would you be without posts like that?

I would not mind this at all. I still like the occasional mindless fun that can be had here but maybe we should do it somewhere else .

I love General Chat...I love pointless threads...I love humuor but I have to agree. I feel partially guilty as I had a ton of involvement in the YART thread which may have sparked this.

Its the self promotional nature that has kept me away. Since this thread is dedicated to this and Shawn seems generally interested, I will list why I have stayed away and now returned mainly to the webmaster section

1.) The sitepoint elections - That really put me off...This is DP, not Sitepoint so why was every signature huge and for that and why did every thread have to turn into that...Not to mention the cut and pasting in the intros section  - I'm all for 1 thread about it but it got ridiculous

2.) The whole Mike /Nintendo thing...Why does every discussion have to first turn into a Nintendo one then a link to one of Mikes sites which talks about it. I hate following links to somethign that could easily be posted here - Mike, you always said you appreciated honesty so thats what I'm givin' - I like you but there are so many links a man can follow that lead to a registration page or a two line post

3.) Starting of new threads - I also like Nintendo but lately a new thread is started for every aspect of his life...Why do we need to vote on whether he is a wacko - Nintendo was much loved because he is wacko - The campaign to brand him as one and mention it in every post is driving people insane...Same as Ampit and Cute Lara - There is no need to dedicate a new thread each day to them......Their entertainment is in their posts in normal threads

There, I got it off my chest

This is still the best forum around by far and I will always come back but come on people. Writing in Leet or W/\Cko!!!! is played out due to over exposure. Take 2 seconds when writing your posts and add something...If a thread is already started, add to it - Don't start another

Both Shawn and this forum have always been good to me so thats why I am writing this. For every person who responded in this thread, I know there are 2 others that agree. Thats only because I deal with half the people on this forum with different projects (Another HUGE benefit of DP). Thats just peoples opinions and no matter what happens I will still be here.

PS. I fully support General Chat posts not counting if that would solve current issues...I wouldn't care if my post count was manually reduced to 1 and the rep system was scrapped...I would still post here

PSS. Didn't know about this thread when I commented here:

Ver interesting thread. I certainly have learnt a lot from here since I joined a month ago. If we have to be more serious about the posts in the General Chat, I think the moderator should change the description as well! I am still very new here.

It is a big surprise for me to learn that many senior members have so different opinions. Anyway, certainly the most interesting forum.

I like the humour and the fun stuff the same as anyone but I think maybe the noise is getting a bit louder than the signal? (To borrow a phrase)

You must be referring to GossipRocks. That wasn't my forum. I wasn't aware of the fact that the threads couldn't be viewed without being registered.
And if you talk about pointless talk: there is a lot here. True, some things have been overdone. However, let's not pour out the baby with the bathwater. A lot of people have fun here being worryless about whether what they post will be edited out or whatever. Let's not let this forum become resource zone, webmaster world or seochat.

I actually reffered to specific trends in my post as did a few others. No one is proposing getting rid of General Chat...In fact everyone who voiced their opinion used to love that section of the forum.

Its not specifically about pointless talk in my mind...It is about mass posting just to post - Nintendo is getting the brunt of it only because his posts at the time this thread was started were sometimes only symbols, etc and completely unrelatated...He will be the first to tell you he was posting 100 times a day with these kinds of posts. As I said, I contributed to that with YART but after that was locked I stopped that.

Hodgeup nearly posts exclusively in General Chat so the fact that he started this thread says volumes....I hope there continue to be more and more General chat threads as there was a time when some of them completely cracked me up.....But the trend is to keep starting nearly the same thread over and over.

It wouldn't bother me one iota if GC posts did not count, but I would be bothered if GC itself was not here. DP is a great resource for information, but equally, it is a great resource for blowing off steam and having some good fun to keep the motivation up.
