?

Do you think that Norman Finkelstein should have been denied tenure?

  1. No, he should NOT have been denied tenure. There should be academic freedom at US universities.

I am not sure how many of you have heard the case of Norman Finkelstein.

Norman Finkelstein, an American political scientist, was denied tenure at DePaul in June 2007, and placed on administrative leave for the 2007-2008 academic year, his three courses having been cancelled.

His crime: Norman Finkelstein had been critical of Israel's role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and had suggested that the Holocaust is being exploited to justify the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, to further Israel's interests, to silence Israel critics. He had written a book: The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering.

Never mind that Norman Finkelstein is jewish and the son of a holocaust survivor. He was attacked merciless by Alan Dershowitz (AIPAC attack dog) and some jewish groups, who actively lobbied the university to deny tenure to Norman Finkelstein.
The university relented to pressure and decided to deny tenure to Norman Finkelstein and cancel all his classes, even though the political science department of the university had praised Finkelstein and recommended tenure.

Several DePaul professors came out on support of Norman Finkelstein to defend academic freedom, even considering taking no confidence votes in the university administrators (including the president).

Finally, on September 5, 2007, Norman Finkelstein announced his resignation after coming to a settlement with the university on undisclosed terms.

What has happened to academic freedom in the United States? Even the son of a holocaust survivor can not be critical of Israel and expect to teach at a university in the US???

It seems that the only acceptable narrative in academia, politic and media is that Israel is the victim, Israel is a peace-loving democracy, Israel has the right to defend itself (and presumably arabs don't), Israel can do no evil, and Palestinians are terrorists.
Anyone who deviate from this narrative will have their career destroyed and will be subjected to smear.

Here is the picture of the brave jewish professor and son of a holocaust survivor who lost his job at DePaul University for being critical of Israel

Toopac goes right for the attack on ablaye, rather than discussing the topic at hand. Typical of these boards. STOP ATTACKING THE MESSENGER, IT DOESN'T CHANGE THE MESSAGE.

And bending over for an islamist who is overall posting an hateful campaign of anti-semitism & propaganda, does not make the OP's message or should we say copy & paste job true.

The OP doesn't even discuss these threads he's just a robot of hate, keep it pure & simple next time fletch, i know you blame Israel for all America's problems but they have a right to exist too;)

Already covered, no extra points for parrots;)

It's funny how you defend someone that is so obviously hateful yet you want to disguise it as criticism? it's nothing to do with your love of Israel is it?

Are you joking every thread is anti-Israel, just look at your threads if your memory is going.

The first step to recovery is to admit the problem:)

Not supporting the destruction of Jews, is hardly supporting Isreal;)

I am NOT an Israel supporter, and I'll admit to that.
I am not anti-semitic. I have no problem with jewish people in general. A lot of them have views similar to mine.
But I do have a problem with zionists who are trying to drive the US to war in the Middle East. I do have a problem with Israel racist and brutal policies against the palestinians.
I am NOT the only one denouncing Israel racist and brutal policies. A lot of jews have done so and been labelled anti-semitic.
This thread presents a blatant case. Norman Finkelstein is jewish and the son of a holocaust survivor. Yet, he has been labelled anti-semitic for criticizing Israel. He lost his job for criticizing Israel.

When it comes to Israel, there is NO freedom of speech. You get attacked as soon as you dare criticize Israel. Your career gets destroyed. WTF!
