Unless those datacenters reverse themselves very quickly I'd guess the page is going to take a helluva dive in the next couple of days. Perfucked! just perfucked!

Google will eventually get this sorted out and sites will return to ~ their normal/previous position.

This is the same type screw up that happened last February. Folks just can't help to think when things like this happen - it just may be GOOGLE FUCKING UP!

Well - that is where I am putting my money!

Gotta go back to this, Caryl. Why are some of the other sites for sleeping bags stable and the experiment page again suffering from Googles version of Mexican jumping beans?

Don't expect anyone to answer...but I find that a vexing question.

Earlpearl: I know you have asked Caryl a question that is difficult to explain. IMO, ALL seo tools have a shelf life . I have followed that thread (Ranking Exp.) and my conclusion was drawn a month ago.

Latest G Update: Also I am very suspect of the main target here being 'footer links'. No penalties but perhaps devalued (0). Links appearing above the fold carry more weight than below??? It sorta makes sense!

Personally, I dont think I have any footer links (at least not that I know of). If I buy links, it has to be in a visible spot, so I get traffic from. Footers suck.

I think the higher up in the html the better, obviously, more a multitude of reasons.

I'm curious as well. Have other pages besides the "sleeping bags" page been affected? Is it that one mainly? Could it be over-optimized BL's (hate to drag that one out) that causes problems?

If they are targetting 'footer links' then this would be ridiculously easy to manipulate using CSS.............You can make them appear first in the code and last on screen.

Great point. Just one more example of how all these "penalization/devaluation" myths can't possibly hold water.

Google doesn't know where the f**k the fold is on a page. It depends on the resolution of the viewer's monitor and how many tool bars he is using. I agree if you are looking for click through traffic you would like you link at the top of the page -- maybe -- but as far as the value to the search engines it just isn't possible.

It is also possible that people ignore all the banners and crap on the top of the page and won't consider clicking on a link until they have looked at the page content and as a result are now looking at the footer.

Sorry Compar, can't agree with you on this one. If you go to google's optimization tips you will see evidence that they do acknowledge prime space on viewing monitors. Even though they are talking about adsense this proves having knowledge of prime real estate on your monitor.
Quote taken right from this page. Your point is good in that monitors come in all shapes and sizes and run at various resolutions. My point is your damn right they know what is prime and non prime real estate on any monitor. With that in mind this idea of devaluing OB footer links seems worthy of thought, IMO.

Compar is referring to the algo not being able to work out which part of the page is real estate. Not Google itself. CSS can be used to make code at the top of the page show up as a footer.

    Caryl,
I had a site that showed a description/ title from months ago under certain searches. It has fixed in the last few hours though and the site is ranking for its name again. Part of the same issue?
