Is Google Analytics any good?

I've used dozens of web tracking systems over the years but I must admit I haven't looked at Google Analytics yet. What puts me off is the fact that its free, and in my experience, free tracking services are poor, or have limited features. But I hear more and more people are using GA, so I need to know will it be able to handle the following :

Full URL reporting for dynamic sites (does it report query strings, i.e individual page visits)

Custom tagging of pages (easier to ID)

Full referrals info (again with the query strings, important for PPC ads etc)

Easy campaign tracking (separating PPC from organic from email newsletters, etc)

And can it handle this without having to get an expensive programmer to mess about with the code, etc ?

Just curious if GA is any good.

I think you are wrong in your belief. Not all free services are bad, and not all paid services are good. I strongly think that GA is not good, infact it is GREAT. :)

    Yes, GA do supports it

Custom tagging of pages (easier to ID)
    I'm not sure about that.

Full referrals info (again with the query strings, important for PPC ads etc)
There is a hack for it. I'm using it. The only problem is that the referred pages are saved as an internal url, so the pageviews shown is greater than the original value (of course, you can filter it)

Easy campaign tracking (separating PPC from organic from email newsletters, etc)
They have a host of features for campaign tracking. I have never used them, so I'm not sure about the above feature.

And can it handle this without having to get an expensive programmer to mess about with the code, etc ?
It is very simple to install the code. All you have to do is place a piece of javascript before the closing </body> tag and voila! you have all your user information at your finger tip :)

    Njoyyyyy ;)

I use Statcounter as well as Google Analytics. Statcounter is cool because it is in realtime and tracks I.P.s ...and Google is good because you can really compile data over time. Statcounter is limited to a list of the last 100 hits and then you have to pay.....they are both great in my opinion!

I am sold on Google Analytics. The detailed information provided is phenomenal. I started using G.A. on August 1, 2006 and have had several months of comparing that has been quite good.

Just because it is free, doesn't mean anything. Remember, this is Google's product!

Google Analytics is a state of the art tool. Very easy to integrate and simple to read and analyse. I tried others but didn't compare to G.A. I love it, it's great.

I have tried a few and GA is the best I have used so far. I have been using it for a few days and so far love it. It is going to save me alot of money using the stats as I will not be wasting my money on advertising that doesn't work and I didn't even know about it. lol.

The stats gives everything and more to what I want in a stats program.

It is good, but I like awstats and webalizer. It comes free with most cpanel hosting and you don't need to setup. The result is also very graphical..

I use awstats to satisfy my every 5 minute traffic check craving but it falls short on segmenting traffic by time.

I use Google Analytics to see what's really up. GA has about 80% of the functionality of Omniture but without the cost or training required (which I find incredible).

I have found Google Analytics to be accurate. Awstats is not accurate nor is some other weblog stats.

Great interaction, works seamlessly been using it for a while -

Main concern is that it seems that not all my uniques appear, infact I have even tested it. - on one day I setup a test site to make sure, I had over 10 people go the site and only TWO uniques showed up!!

Can anyone recommend a great analytics programme that can offer live time tracking that does show all uniques?

IMO, Google bundle with so many things at a time and the reason their system couldn’t handle everything properly. It is better to use few other tools beside google analytic.

I have tested a lot of statistics tools, and in my opinion Google Analytics is the best.
The only thing that it don't have is the hours inform.
