I didn't really want to jump on board to this one, but this post made no sense to me.

If taxes will rise concomitant to a rise in public spending due to babyboomers entering retirement age - how, exactly, does this translate to a lower debt? I.e., if a marginal dollar increase in taxes goes to a marginal increase in public spending, with none of the additional tax revenues going to drawing down the debt, how will this reduce the burden?

Taxes and Social Security are two different things. Now go ahead and give me some sources that prove that you can tax people into prosperity. I'm waiting.

Republicans are frauds, liars, thieves and generally losers that are promoting policies that are bankrupting the Treasury, destroying our Military, making America the most hated nation on the face of the earth and they are endangering our security!

Think about Katrina, we could not even get a cup of water to people for a week because 40% of the Louisiana national guard was in Iraq to protect Cheney's oil fields and making a bloody fortune (Billions) for Halliburton in the process as they provide food, housing and logistics for the armed forces with their no bid contract the former Defense Secretary Richard Cheney set up for them!

ALL AMERICANS THAT CARE FOR THE VICTIMS OF THIS WAR (ALL OF US) VOTE AGAINST THE LIES, FRAUD AND THEFTS AND THE DECEPTION OF THE ROVE, CHENEY, BUSH, LIBBY, KEN LAY TEAM!

Yep, I agree... Think about Katrina. Democrat Mayor, dropped the ball. Democrat Govenor, dropped the ball.. 60 years of Democratic rule... Where are the frauds?

Yep, Katrina is an excellant case study for those wanting to understand why democrats cannot get elected at the federal level.

Oh here we go... Posting ingenious google keyword searches as support to ludicrous claims.

I think I pegged the "attack" part correctly.

Is Joe Wilson making false claims too Mia, or did Bush and Cheney to make Halliburton and friends Trillions.

PS: I forgot to mention that Republicans are also cowards that hide and let kids barely out of high school do their dirty work for them!

PPS: No answers? Just like you Nixon boys could not answer the above linked thread! LOL cowards!

If you want to know about the current situation with US national debt and how higher taxation will be needed to prevent the debt from becoming a very large burden on the US economy, then I reccomend this IMF paper from 2004.

In 2004 the debt level was considerably lower than it is now.

    Some nippets:

The U.S. general government deficit is now among the highest in the industrialized world, and public debt levels are approaching those in other major industrial countries (Figure 1.1).

    And another:

Although fiscal (tax) policies have undoubtedly provided valuable support to the recovery so far, the return to large deficits raises two interrelated concerns. First, with budget projections showing large federal fiscal deficits over the next decade, the recent emphasis on cutting taxes, boosting defense and security outlays, and spurring an economic recovery may come at the eventual cost of upward pressure on interest rates, a crowding out of private investment, and an erosion of longer-term U.S. productivity growth.

    And another:

With the approaching retirement of the baby boom generation, reestablishing a balanced U.S. federal deficit is becoming increasingly urgent.

If you read the section headed 'The Policy Challenge' you will see that a restrain in government spending along with an increase in the general tax rate (approx 2%) is needed to manage the debt.

Please note I am not posting things about the US national debt level because I am anti-american. I am posting it becasue it is a genune issue, especially with elections coming up.

It is so bad in the UK that the EU has taken them to task:

I don't find it anti-American, and I wouldn't be too bothered if it were. My country is my country, and stands up to history on its own accord.

No, my only issue is with your original assessment. There is no doubt the looming deficit poses long term problems, not only for America, but for the world financial system, much as it did for the Pax Brittanica once the appearance of Britain's ability to sustain its role as "the lender of last resort" clearly did not square with the economic reality.

I am simply addressing your post regarding baby-boomers: you posed both an increase in taxation and spending - taxation, to pay for the increase in public expenditure. Non of those additional public monies would aid in lowering the debt, and the net effect would be zero, at least as stated in your post; yet you also closed by reiterating how this additional taxation would lower the debt. Hence, my questioning your post.
