Do you thing that the effort with directories is worth in 2010

    Hi,
The reason I raise this question is because things in the search universe change rapidly, and I think that nowadays its better to focus all your efforts in different direction.
So, for the last few months, I started totally avoiding directory submissions and focused fully on any other link building techniques, no need to repeat the common mantras.

What do you think about the use of directories in the search reality of 2010 ?

I'm sure many will disagree but I think there is still some value in directories (especially niche).

When I'm running Linkscape, Y! Page Links, etc... directories still show as a source of incoming juice. Until that changes, I'm going to keep my list on auto-pilot.

You will suffer terribly now. :)

Why would you focus all seo efforts in one particular direction?

If you decide to stop using directories then using another method without anything else is very restrictive.

Your name makes this a little bit funny. ;)

Didnt notice the name. Made me crack up! Multidirectional SEO?

Well my plea to the OP would be: give us some reasons why we should stop working on our directories when they do not only serve our visitors as a good source of content-rich websites but also does it hold value for SEO companies and webmasters who "pay" for submissions on a regular basis? ;)

The more options you have for link building the better.

    Very good point.

And to the OP, the search engines change quite quickly, yes, but that doesn't mean that anything within the search engines is suddenly obsolete because they dont follow the same pattern.

Remember, this is web directories, not search engines, there have been no 2010 official announcements from google regarding directories, so why not carry on using them and meanwhile checkout any new methods that may be around?

    I agree.

Well in my process, I'm still doing the directory submission! And I'm just submitting 20 submission a day.. And I still see some result with it.. I mean another source of increasing your backlinks! So I guess it still work.

Web directories will always provide backlinks for Web sites which in turn will help improve one’s ranking with SEs and give organic traffic in the long run.

UNLESS anyone could provide a concrete proof that backlinks from Web directories have been eliminated in the algo of SEs.

...we would appreciate if you have any basis for this statement ;)

You can get out what you put in.

My first words of advice is to stop listening to the drivel on these forums.
My second words of advise are to not chase pagerank

Directories are still working nowadays. It can still help your website status. But today I prefer backlinking forum posting and social bookmarking.

    Thanks for the criticism :)
I didn't say one particular direction.
I said that I'm avoiding directories, by choice, because they're becoming more and more outdated, not to speak the saturation when your links are amongst some few more thousands.
And I'm not advising you to stop using directories, I'm saying that they are no more part of my link building strategies.

    As @an0n says:
As far as it's seen the driving forces here are for both chasing pagerank and directories.

That pretty much sums up where I am right now, too. I have submitted probably to well over a thousand directories over the years. Nowadays I rarely do. It's just not currently part of my broad-based link-building strategy.

I dont think Search engines can use any other method than crawling through links to reach websites. So, having backlinks will always be an important part of Searching algorithm too. And directories help you getting good backlinks. Again, there is no chance that Search engines would try to avoid directories in their Search so that the links from directories would become useless.

If you are not after PR then why bother with link building techniques anyhow?
If you are after SERP, then why bother and talk about directories issue, after all good SEO
will put your site on top of the list regardless who’s linked to you?

Furthermore, who said you have to submit to 10,000 or even 1,000 directories, social networks etc.,
if 200 solid backlinks will be more than enough for your site to be ranked 4, 5 or even 6?

Why to you want to talk about directories and not about uselessness of
social networks, blogs and forums instead?

Back link is a foundation. To do another system they have to rebuild the house.
