Hi people, Are there any good ways of stopping spam submissions on my directory? I already have a captcha which has helped but I still get a lot of rubbish. love to know you thoughts as ever. Shellerz
Hire a coder knowledgeable in your problems and script to block unwanted submissions and block by IP areas or countries that are abusing your resources.
becuase your link isnt in your sigs... @shellerz Trust me its another owner doing it for kicks or just a plain spammer from here. Im sure your getting submission that make no sence and about 20 at a time as he/she/it is using an automated script that sends garbage to tons of directories. (did all of ours and we get Zero garbage submits) Contact DP member (Silksmooth) and he can block all the countries that send you spam and/or dont understand how to write English titles and descriptions. OR you can contact DP (anon) whom sells a mod for spam which works really well also... laterz malcolm
I have a spam guard system in place that misses nothing - 100% accurate - if you want that contact an0n
Spam is spam regardless. The script in question doesn't have either the brainpower and/or wanting to defeat it behind the programming to combat it. Maybe they'll eventually get to it, I really don't know for sure since it's been 3+ years now. However, I have gotten to it as I made a commitment 2.5 years ago to get rid of the spammers. Why would someone need 'details' on spam. I think we all know exactly what it is. I got the goods malcolm Yes I'll agree on that, which is why I had to invest some time to create one that really works. I have created a do the math as well as an internal admin drive spamguard and also a pragmatic one, which nobody is going to get by. I even offered $100 to anyone who could defeat it. Ask swedal below if anyone has done so to this day. Even though we found yet another flaw/bug in the script today, it still didn't get by the spamgaurd. Hows that for 'in your face' to the spammers
I hear about an0n's spamguard a lot. I have tried a couple of things on my directories. 1. Turned captcha to math captcha 2. Put a ban word mod and got rid of obvious spam submission 3. I also put an IP ban mod to ban repeatedly offending IP, combined this with mod that searches for 'other submissions from same IP' and I am able to control spam to a great extent. btw, all these are measures that are used on a free directory, paid ones would have a different kind of spam altogether.
My methods are using captcha, ban ip, domain, email, words. They do give up, eventually. When the spam stops though i do tend to miss the messages like: good site teen f*8k s**t wh**es and the ones with 15 xtrufsdgkg.com domains in them.
I use this code below replace the X with the IP address you want to block.Place the code in your htaccess file. Works Great for me.You can add to the list also. It seems to block only one IP address at a time. order allow, deny deny from xx.xx.xxx.xxx deny from xx.xxx.xxx.xxx deny from xx.xx.xx.xxx deny from xx.xx.xx.xxx allow from all
get a captcha, as well as how many can be submitted in one day from one ip try to make accounts and make it community review project, similar to digg, make it that if it's a spam entry, your users can bury it to the death.
I put the codes in my .htaccess file on both dir. 1. was upgrade to a newer phpLD2x while the other was not. The upgraded one has no spam, while the older one does. Try upgrading to the newest phpLD 2x that is if your script is older than dirt like mine was. .htaccess russian block codes: http://www.wizcrafts.net/russian-blocklist.html
phpld seems hard to stop the spam submissions, like wwws said, it's a alternative method to stop useless submission by turn on the user registration function.
The reason why is very little can be done to stop spam is because spambots don't use Submission Forms but go directly and use Submission script. The only effective way to stop spam submissions is to tell script to allow only one submission from the same IP address, lets say within an hour or 24 hours or 30 days etc. by placing that IP address temporary in a Blacklist Of course it will restrict legitimate users but I don't see any harm if they come back and add another site within a week for example, which is very small price to pay for stopping all those automated submissions by spambots. fastreplies
You have a problem with spam mainly because you are using a FREE directory script that is quite old now...and is a spammer's dream. Spend some cash and upgrade to a recent version, or pay a programmer to add some kind of spam guard mod to your directory.
Which directory software or script are you using? PHPLD has the option to remove listings as spams such that it wont get submitted from that IP again.
