Am I doing something wrong or Godaddy is trying to screw me?

I tried to renew my domain name and for my surprise it gave me no option but to buy privacy protection as well. How could such a company give me no option but to buy a service I don't want?

Here is what I am talking about:

    Review Your Shopping Cart

Product Name Quantity Unit Price Your Price Total Price

.COM Domain Name Renewal - 2 Years*
    Sku: 10102-1 Domain: mydomainnama.com... 1 Remove
    View
    $17.90
    recurring $17.90 $18.40*

    Private Registration Services - Renewal
    Length: 2 Year(s) Sku: 17001-1 Domain: mydomain... 1
    $8.99
    annual $8.99 $17.98

If you have a promo or source code enter it here:** Your subtotal (USD):
    $36.38

There is no option to remove the Private Registration Services.
I don't like that, they wasted at least half an hour of my time over a simple thing.
Sorry for ranting in public, but hey that's the way to make these businesses do a better customer service.

If I decide to transfer that site to namecheap.com for how long my site will be down?
    Thank you,

godaddy seems to force renewal of domain privacy in your case.
if you transfer a domain, it does not go down anytime...Namecheap currently has privacy free

It was to my knowledge that you couldn't transfer a domain to a new registrar if it was less than 60 or 90 days before it expired. Or maybe it was only 7 days....I have a crappy memory. But I'm pretty sure there is some kind of restriction.

They did the same thing to me too. I didn't opt for the privacy protection the first time, but was forced to pay for it the second time. I buy all my domains through namecheap now. GoDaddy pissed me off when I asked them a simple question and they replied witha snotty answer and no help whatsoever.

My domain will expire in about 10 days. They pissed me off too since their affiliate company Domains by Proxy that is in charge of the privacy, does not know my domain exist. I cannot login to change my privacy settings. I have only one domain with go daddy and there will be no more, from them.

Here is their email from them:

    "Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for contacting Customer Support. I apologize for any confusion regarding this matter. We do not force you to purchase private registration for your domain name. That is a choice you are able to make at the time of your domain registration purchase. If you would like to cancel your private registration, you may do so. However, private registration is handled by our affiliate company Domains by Proxy. You will need to follow the previously provided instructions to cancel your private registration."

They don't force me, Domains by Proxy domainsbyproxy.com/RetrieveAccount.aspx
    does.

And that domain is my main domain with hostgator.
Sorry for ranting here, I hope somebody benefits from this.

Godaddy owns domainsbyproxy.com - they share the same support number. I had to call them and demand that they get ride of that extra charge (it was free when i signed up). They did it pretty quickly over the phone.

    Hope that helps

I've been with Godaddy for over half a decade and have a portfolio of roughly 1,000 domains. One of the myriad frustrating and borderline unethical practices Godaddy continues to run on its customers is the "auto-renewal" of domain privacy services at domainsbyproxy.com.

I'm not sure which is more outrageous:

    a. that Godaddy is the owner of DomainsbyProxy.com

    b. that Godaddy tries (and I'm sure succeeds all day times thousands of poor customers) to sneak in the auto-renewal of the privacy service, or

    c. that in order to renew a domain that had their privacy service (even if as probably has been the case MANY MANY times) they "give away" that privacy service because you originally ordered the domain with X number of other domains) you have to literally find some random username and password for domainsbyproxy.com (not the same as your godaddy login, even though it's the same company!!!!) and then find the domain you want to renew using their clunky interface, then remove the privacy service, THEN go back to godaddy checkout to complete your domain purchase(s) only to find that your "session expired"!

    INFURIATING!

Shame on Godaddy for running this obvious and petty scam!

to renew domain that you have registered with a free privacy, you need to cancel privacy first using domainsbyproxy.com. It seems godaddy interface only allows to order privacy and not to cancel it. An alternative quick way to cancel the privacy is to push the domain(s) into a secondary account, then push back and renew as usual.
