Check it out, just found it on digg. http://digg.com/software/Oldest_registered_Internet_domain_still_in_operation
actually, looks like business.com has been around longer http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.business.com I believe that 1998 was when it sold ... for 7 million. Sex.com on the other hand is filtered by archive. Are there some tools that can backtrack previous registrations?
weird, the previous post has been overlapped with my signature Let's try again: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.business.com business.com has a record dating back further, believe it changed owners in 1998 (sold for 7 Million)
i didn't think the internet was around in the 80's..you learn something new everyday! selling for 7 mil. crazy.
The Internet has been around since about 1967 when it was a US military project called ARPANET. It's use was limited to military contractors and academia for many years. The Interent was fully opened to the public in the mid 1990s and started to grow rapidly when the Netscape browser was introduced around 1994. 1994 is also considered to be the birth of the World Wide Web, which took the Internet from a primarily text-based medium to a rudimentary multi-media environment.
Wow!! Well yes Internet is very old...1985... when I was born lol... Well initially internet was build for a group or people at AT/T labs... then it grew and grew and still growing...
Okay, I'm seeing some serious misunderstandings about the history of the Internet and what the Internet is. As was pointed out above the Internet got its start as ARPANET in the late 1960's by DARPA which is part of the United States Department of Defense (yes what became the Internet was essentually invented by the U.S. military). Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn invented the design of the Internet with the Internet Protocol in 1973, which was then finalized by 1974. It took another ten years of hard work to roll out the Internet and replace ARPANET, which was completed by 1983. The first "killer" Internet app was email in 1973. What everyone here seems to think is the Internet is actually called the World Wide Web which rides on top of the Internet and was invented by Tim Berners-Lee with his first web browser called "WorldWideWeb" (later renamed Nexus) which ran on the NeXT computer in 1990. The Netscape web browser was first released in 1994. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was also founded by Tim Berners-Lee in 1994. Now hopefully people will understand that the Internet is much older than most realize and that it is more than just the WWW and email. http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/FAQ.html http://www.isoc.org/internet/history/brief.shtml http://www.w3.org/Consortium/history
