I tried who.is but the site is blocked by proxy...I want to find out which hosting company a certain domain is hosted by...

Otherwise, can anyone recommend a reliable host which can cater for 600-1200GB's a month?

I love em too; but I get blocked from there on a daily basis. I have to have backups....

whois.sc rules beyond all others, especially how easy it is just to do /domain

Agree once again, whois.sc is by far and away the best.

This site offers a unix-style command line whois: www.kiraly.com/software/utilities/whois/

It's usually faster than using a website, if you do many whois queries

I haven't tried it, but if it's the same as the *nix version, it would be:

Start -> Run -> Type: command or cmd

Then:

whois somesite.com

You can try our cheesy little whois page:

Concerning hosting, I use http://www.serverpronto.com/. They've worked well for me, and have been reliable, but all the packages are unmanaged so that might be an issue.

For such huge requirement, I would suggest you to contact www.sonataweb.net they provide real good service and support.

You may also search google and other hosting forums for more options.

I use the Geektools Whois windows client http://www.geektools.com/tools.php
Running a traceroute (tracert in windows) can give you some clues. Also if you use the Netcraft tool http://uptime.netcraft.com/ it will tell you who the netblock owner is (usually the hosting company).

For those bandwidth requirements there are some other threads around on dedicated servers. I use http://www.servermatrix.com who have a starter deal with 1200GB bandwidth.
