Most 'free' methods for getting backlinks won't get you a backlink on a PR page. It's possible that these pages get a PR in future. Your best bet is to write unique useful content, social bookmark the content and hope that some bloggers take fancy to it and give you a free quality backlink.
Other most popular method to get backlinks is to do reciprocal / three way link exchange. It's not exactly free because you are giving a backlink that's not worth 0.

Article submission, directory submission or social bookmarking will only get a link from a PR 0 (or PRn N/A) page most of the times. OP is looking for methods to get link from PR pages. 3-way link exchange is the only way if he wants these links 'instantly' :)

Find good pr websites and google them. On my 8 years experience with google, it's the best method of getting diversified links to your website. We can chat if you like, I give away free learning session on chat or on skype for a lot of webmasters.

Zee has given a good way to get instant PR backlink. +Rep for that.
Yes google indexes blog comment links and PR juice is also passed if link is a dofollow link. But don't start spamming the blogs ;)

I am curious on the difference between related and non-related PR websites. You mentioned diversified, care to elaborate this point please.

A related site is one that is on a similar topic as yours. You should try to diversify out of your niche a little with other sub niches of your parent niche, larger categories of your niche, and sub niches of your niche. For example, if your site is about car repair then try to get links from car sales sites, car part sites, car manufacturer sites, car review sites, and anything else you can think of on cars. Then think about related "repair" sites like tools, oil, gasoline, paint shops...and once again...everything else you can think of. By using google you'll get some ideas.

Sign up for one of those link exchange programs where people put up links to you if you put links up from other people....
I've been using positionpusher for quite a while now and I've seen an increase in backlinks.

It takes time to build up great links, a lot of the time to get good quality backlinks instantly you are going to have to have a high traffic website or a website with some PR already that could help out the website you are exchanging with.

The formula is 80% related links, 20% non-related links.
The diversity is important when it comes to the type of links you get (links from drupal, wordpress, directory webites etc. Basically success will come when your site's evolution will follow a natural way.

Earlier this year I started a website focusing mostly on link building and not on the content. I found that I was getting an ok amount of links, but not enough to justify the work I was putting into it. More recently I started a website and focused almost all of my efforts on the content. After a couple of months I had a ton more links then I had with the previous site and I did very little link building. Finding a good common ground between content creation and link building will help you out a great deal in the long run. I agree with what everyone says in this thread. Submitting to various directories, do follow blogs, and link exchanging with websites similar to yours is a great way to get traffic and build back links.

Wherever you submit, at least make sure it is statistically better than your site. I've seen so many people waste YEARS on pointless submission just to be disappointed. I was one of them.

If you are able to offer a discount or provide an online competition you can then get your site listed on sites and forums offering money saving tips and competition lists.

Reciprocal linking is good but I heard that google knows when someone is doing 3 way reciprocal linking.
So be careful

It is extremely important to strike a balance between quality content and lots of links. You can't get a ton of links with terrible content, but at the same time if you only build great content and no links your site will sit alone on an island w/ no traffic.

Still a noob, I don't understand the importance of backlinking, or what it entails exactly. I have had other websites offer to "affiliate" with my website, but I have only affiliated with one since we use their site for running xbox live contest.
I heard running a legit gaming site and having tons of "affiliate" links hurts your website in the eyes of videogame publishers, so I have avoided it... is this the same thing?
We are having success with gaming publishers and starting to get games from some of the bigger companies after only getting love from smaller ones for months.

couldn't agree more.. start with awesome content for 3 months... then switch over to mad link building for the next couple months (while still plugging in fresh content to keep the bots crawling your pages) and just sit and watch as the rankings take over (use this formula for all of my brand-spanking-new niche focused blogs)

Hello everyone.
Do you think link building is the only way to get a good position in SERP? Does Google give credit to the content of the site also?
